Trip

I have my students take a camping trip. There are in groups to research a national park. They are all pretending that they are in college and must be appointed areas that each person is in charge of before they meet again. (kind of like a spring break) Here are the areas that we cover:

1. Social studies: they draw the state and label the following: latitute/longitude, scales, grid, capital, land forms, water ways (just the important ones)

2. Math: they design to my specs the following using area/perimeter, measuring skills/ geometry, discounts, percents, tax
1. back pack
2. binoculars
3. emergency radio
4. paddles
5. living accommodations
6. food with prices and figure out coupon discounts from stores flyers

3. English: They are to create a journal for their 4 day adventure through the parks to share around the campfire along with a ghost story.

During this work time they can only work with the experts in their projects. After completion the day before the presentation they then meet with their camping friends to work on their presentation. For this presentation I take the class to my house for a campfire where they share their journeys. The students provide the marshmallows and I provide the hot dogs. This is always a great time and they never forget this. I have students come back from the Jr. High and ask if I have done the camping project yet.
