American History and American Government - Civil Rights

Civil Rights Overview

After studying as a class the major events in the Civil Rights Movement we break the class into groups of 2-4 and assign each group one major event, person, OR organization from that time. Ex. Events: March on Washington, Birmingham,Summer Voting Drive, Selma March, Little Rock High School, Brown v.Board of Education, etc. People: Jesse Jackson, MLK Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Fannie Lou Hamer, James Farmer, etc. Organizations: CORE, NAACP, SCLC, etc.

Each group researches their topic and finds out basic facts. They then complete a poster. The topic is a circle the center with four boxes extending from it. For a event poster the students draw pictures in the 4 boxes to represent:
1) What happened before the event
2) people involved
3) the event
4) what happened after the event/result.

For a people poster:
1)where and when born
2) what was so important about them/the main event they participated in
3) organizations they participated in
4) when they died/what they do today.

For organizations poster:
1) when and where founded
2) people involved
3) what the goal of the organization was
4) events they organized/participated in. These posters were done on large 18x24 construction paper and turned out great!
