Skittles Project

This particular project will allow students to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. You can arrange to complete this project with another class which would provide you with some real-time data.

Unlike some of the previous projects, “What’s At the End of the Rainbow?” will have only one activity, with the main focus being math.

Classroom teachers can either purchase enough of the fun-sized Skittles to have enough for each student, or one for a small group of students. (If you are unable to find the snack-sized portions, you can always purchase a regular bag and create the correct number of portions you need. A single fun-sized bag weights 20 grams. To keep data accurate, it will be important for you to provide 20 gram servings. ) Prior to opening the bags, students will first make estimates. Students will then count the number of Skittles in their bag. Finally, they will sort their Skittles by color and record this data. You can then post your data via email or a Google Form.

In addition to any necessary resources, worksheets and Internet links needed to complete the project, activities, lessons and extensions across the curriculum will also be provided with this project.

Are you and your students ready to make some tally marks?
