What's at the End of the Rainbow? - Skittles Math
Welcome to The Teacher's Corner current Online Collaboration Project of the 2017-2018 school year. The project is open to any K-6 classroom and will run from March 7, 2018 - March 21, 2018. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. Click on the "Showcase" link to view this year's data.
This particular project will allow students to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and will provide them with real-time data. Classes from around the country, and the hopefully the world, will be collecting, sharing and analyzing data.
Unlike some of the previous projects, “What’s At the End of the Rainbow?” will have only one activity, with the main focus being math.
Classroom teachers can either purchase enough of the fun-sized Skittles to have enough for each student, or one for a small group of students. (If you are unable to find the snack-sized portions, you can always purchase a regular bag and create the correct number of portions you need. A single fun-sized bag weights 20 grams. To keep data accurate, it will be important for you to provide 20 gram servings. ) Prior to opening the bags, students will first make estimates. Students will then count the number of Skittles in their bag. Finally, they will sort their Skittles by color and record this data. All data, other than estimates, will be posted to the TTC web site. As Skittles data begins to be uploaded to the site, classes can begin analyzing the data. An optional element to this project is to take and post photos of your students working on the project.
In addition to any necessary resources, worksheets and Internet links needed to complete the project, activities, lessons and extensions across the curriculum will also be provided with this project.
