On the day of their presentation, students go through a Customs Entrance (acted out with two other students, usually after having done some in-depth reading with them about Ellis Island or Angel Island), They love entering, being interviewed and "checked" for diseases. Then they open their suit case and share their passport and family story. There is some discomfort among some families who have experienced forced immigration or families who may be here "illegally." Work individually with those students to create a more generic passport rather than one that speaks specifically to their own family's history. Two African American students chose to write about their Native American heritage instead of their African. They did beautifully and were very proud of their work. Use a rubric to grade the presentations Give Yourself a Grade on Your Passport & Suitcase Presentation For each item, notice how many points you can earn. Based on the quality of your work, give yourself the amount of points you believe you deserve. Give yourself full points for an excellent job. Give no points if you did not do that part of the assignment. Total your points at the end to give yourself an overall grade. Points Possible/Points Earned PASSPORT SUITCASE TOTAL 180/ Hope this makes sense. If you have publisher, I will send you the whole passport in an attachment. |
