Mother's Day Activities and Projects

Microwave Heating Pad

1. Start with a 14 inch square of fabric...
2. Fold in half with "right" sides inside...
3. Stitch a half inch seam across one end and down the long side...
4. Turn the "pillow case" inside out...
5. Fill with 2 pounds of long grain rice (no minute rice)...
6. Fold in the end seam and topstitch...
7. Voila' you are finished!!!

I made the kids a gift tag to include that gave directions for use and the kids wrapped their pads to go home.

For My Mom,
Here’s a gift for you made by my hand and filled with love,
Just pop me in the microwave for 2 minutes,
Spritz me with water if you wish,
Or cool me off in the “frig” (or freezer),
Either way, I’ll ease your aches and pains!

The size and amount of rice can vary according to your preference, but the weight of the bag is designed to hold it in the desired area. Too light and it won't work as well, too tightly packed and it won't mold to body parts.

You can bring in a portable sewing machine to school and have each child use it to sew the seams.
