Hi all.
This is my first year teaching 10th and 11th grade literature, (but not my first year teaching) and I feel as though I am stuck in a rut. My staple activites are reading, writing (creatively and to answer questions), and drawing in one form or another. I need new ideas for activities. There are so many great things you can do with literature, but for the life of me I can't seem to think of any.
At the moment my 10th graders are starting a long unit on "The Human Experience." It's a very open theme, and the standards that it addresses are just as open. It's essentially about character analysis.
The textbook provided stinks, which means that I have to come up with my own stuff, which would normally be fine, but I am at a loss as to where to find good stories/poems for HS students.
But even if I could find that or use the textbook, I feel like my mind is a big wheel spinning endlessly and fruitlessly on the pavement, seeking something to cling to and failing, increasing my frustration.
Can someone please help me get through this semester? I'd ask the other 10th and 11th grade teachers, but I feel like they resent my asking, like I'm taking advantage of their hard work, which both would and wouldn't be what I'm doing. I just need a few ideas to get me going and maybe a site with resources...
Thanks!
