Hi, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. And sorry to sound as desperate as I'm fixing to sound....

My just turned 18 year old son and I need some serious help. He failed two courses in 11th grade...English and Math of all things. We had just moved to the area and well, there's no excuse, but it just happened. He previously never failed a class all his life and I swear it was an issue with adjusting among other things.

Okay, well, so we got him signed up for the Virtual Learning Academy mostly because we scrambled to get him back to his old school which meant he couldn't take either 'in class' summer programs since one school claimed he no longer went there and one school we prematurely withdrew him from. We are very rural too, which doesn't help. So, we did what we could which was to get him enrolled with the VLA 'online' courses.

OMG, let me tell you....that MATH isn't math at all....its trig..geometry...you name it. Its so hard. Just so hard. He's flown through the online English with no problem. Its this math. So we hired two local tutors (a backup just in case) and as luck would have things they've BOTH flaked out on us. This despite the offer of ten dollars a lesson. Lessons are approx 20 questions and would take someone who knows this stuff less than an hour. There's a total of 36 lessons, we've eeeked out 6. Someone could make a very fast 300 dollars on the last 30 if they wanted to.

I'm pretty desperate at this point, the deadline is in 8 days to have them all turned in. Its not that he hasn't tried. He's had it rough. His sister died last year (my daughter)....this is really a stress on us. I just want to get some help here and don't quite know where else to turn. On other sites I've been hit with '.50 cents a minute' quotes and stuff like that....I can't do that. I can only do what I have with is 300 for the last 30 lessons. I don't care if it takes 15 minutes a lesson....a lesson is a lesson as far as I'm concerned. And my mom sent me that to help out, so thats all I have for it.

I am a long time Ebayer, I have a PP account set up. I can call and speak to anyone who is interested here. I want to be known as up and up, a real person, who just needs help. I will very willingly give out my cell number but don't want to break rules on this site.

Thanks and I will check back tonight for any responses,
Lisa

Well hello there Lisa. I am sorry for the loss you have incurred! By now I assume everyone is trying to get on with life so to speak. I have had my share of trouble with Math and have found that one really needs to teach themself from a good book. Some will show every detail and those will be consistant from problem to problem. Formulas must be memorized as well as used properly. My fifth grader is learning Algebra. Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is something he taught me!

Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and then Subtraction.
Of course I am no teacher, but one really has to apply ones self. Time must be sacrificed and good things will happen. Good Luck!!!

I got help for my daughter last year. We checked with a local college and got some recommendations for tutors. We found a very good one one that charged $14 an hour. I had been told to expect to pay $1 a minute, so I was extremely relieved. She pulled a "B" in precalc. We are going to get the same tutor for calculus this fall. Sometimes it just takes somebody explaining it in a new way to learn it. I hope this helps. Best of Luck!

Hi. I might be able to help your son. I have a M.Ed in Math education and am certified to teach high school math, 9 - 12 in MA. It would have to be online. I can set up a conference room to meet online, at any time. Let me know. I also have a resume and references as well. Good luck with your son. Sincerely, Berta Hyken. My email is berta.hyken.1993@alum.bu.edu.
