"Sharks kill fewer than 4 humans on average each year, while humans kill an estimated 100 million sharks annually. You're more likely to be killed by a lightning strike, bee sting, falling coconut or falling vending machine than a shark bite." - Sharkangels.org

"Media hype feeds our irrational fear of sharks. In 2007, one person died from a shark bite, worldwide. Three people died from falling in sand pits, 20 from dog bites, 49 from lightening strikes and 79 from hunting accidents. 747 people died from bicycle accidents." - Sharkangels.org (http://www.sharkangels.org/the_truth_about_sharks.shtml)

I posted this because I feel very strongly that we are ignorant of reality. As an passionate diver, I am exposed to the reality of the massive dwindling of shark populations. Most people are blinded by the media - and we are all damaged by the results.

This is something I didn't know. I can think of some horror stories about sharks I read in places like People magazine and Reader's Digest, but there is very little - if any - mention of the shrinking of the shark population.
