And I really oughta have enough sense to not do summer
sessions of any kind. Not at my "age" and with all my
experience. Naughty me!:idontknow:

Am finishing up my second summer science "camp." I've done
this for years. It's never gotten me down like it has this
year. No, it isn't the "work." Making slime, building model
rockets, shooting off water rockets and the like are not
what I consider work. They're a LOT of fun,

And you would think that with a clientel of all girls (7-8
year olds the first week and 10-12 year olds the second),
things wouldn't be so bad. Well, you would be wrong.:cry2:

As I opened with, maybe I have just been doing this too
long.

The girls say hurtfuil things, are rude, presumptuous and
never mind the overwhelming sense of entitlement they seem
to have. I have to say that I did this for 5 years in
another county, in another school system and never ONCE had a girl act this way. Not once!

And this is a mostly rural school system, not an urban one,
rife with "yuppie larvae."

It leaves me wondering if the flaw is within me. And Silvana, save your venom for another occasion. I still have you on ignore and even if I didn't, one of your self-rightous lectures won't help matters!

Well, after tomorrow, there won't be anymore. Think I will
escape to the mountains of North Carolina and recuperate.

I'm probably going to be torn apart here for my generalizations but...

I don't think it is you. I see this type of behavior too. It isn't just in my classroom. I've visited other rooms as well and been startled by it.

I think you put it very well: They have this attitude of entitlement.

This is part of the reason I will not teach children over the age of six. I can go up to second grade but probably never will. I don't want to have to deal with all that.

Sure, there are some really great groups of kids. In particular, I had one class of the most awesome children last summer. They were the best. The majority were 5 and 6.

However, there are also the patches of students were one bad attitude spoils the whole bunch. Those can be very tough and overshadow the good class you had at points.

I am sorry this has gone poorly for you. I have to admit, the mean, self-righteous attitude of some of our young people (especially girls) is very upsetting. However, do you watch any TV or see any of the movies these kids go to? When putting people down, making them feel bad, is seen as "funny", what do you expect them to do? I am totally disgusted with out popular media and what they teach this young people is acceptable behavior. Being cruel seems to make you popular, and that is the saddest thing of all.
Keep up the good work, show them that you do not accept this behavior. You never know who you will influence...maybe no one, but maybe, just one, and that will make a difference.

I'm not a teacher yet, but I will say that I wouldn't be putting the blame on myself in your shoes. Many of my children's friends are raving brats that are used to getting their own way, I would have to say the fault lies on the parent, not the teacher.

Head out for Chimney Rock and leave your cares behind :)
