1.) Do you work at a Public or Private School?
2.) What grade do you teach?
3.) Do you find that boys struggle more with their weight,
or girls?
4.) On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being the best) Does your
cafeteria offer well balanced meals?
5.) Does your school offer health programs such as Jump for
Heart, or any other after school activities such as
soccer etc?
6.) Do you use food as a reward? If not, what do you use to
reinforce good behavior?
7.) How do you think we as teachers can help our students
develop a healthy lifestyle?

Hello !
1.) Do you work at a Public or Private School? I teach at a public school.
2.) What grade do you teach?I teach 9-12th grade
3.) Do you find that boys struggle more with their weight,
or girls? In my school, I would say that the girls tend to struggle more with their weight.
4.) On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being the best) Does your
cafeteria offer well balanced meals? I would guess a 3. I don't spend much time in the Cafeteria.
5.) Does your school offer health programs such as Jump for
Heart, or any other after school activities such as
soccer etc?We have a full athletics program and we also offer intermural sports/activities that are open to all students.
6.) Do you use food as a reward? If not, what do you use to
reinforce good behavior? Sometimes we use food, but mostly we offer free tickets to sporting events for rewards.
7.) How do you think we as teachers can help our students
develop a healthy lifestyle? We can best help our students by modeling a healthy lifestyle

[QUOTE=sped-teacher;42392][QUOTE=FranciscanStudent;42345]Hello !
I'm currently writing an action research paper on childhood obesity AND am in desperate need for teachers to fill out this quick survey (7 Q's)...If you could help me out, I would be so appreciate...THANKS SO MUCH! God Bless
1.) Do you work at a Public or Private School?
public
2.) What grade do you teach?
6th
3.) Do you find that boys struggle more with their weight,
or girls?
I think it is equal.
4.) On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being the best) Does your
cafeteria offer well balanced meals?
3 Although fat content has been reduced, most of the calories come from carbohydrates. also, there is too much prepackaged and processed food used. That is worse than fat!
5.) Does your school offer health programs such as Jump for
Heart, or any other after school activities such as
soccer etc?
We do participate in Jump Rope for the heart and other programs such as this. Two weeks ago we had a countywide run for schools. There are after-school athletics and activities (for a limited number of students who make the team) such as volleyball, basketball, track and next year there will be softball. Our students get P.E. for one or two grading periods out of four. We have implemented 90 minutes of activity a week to get the students out of their seats, but this takes away from the limited instructional time. Gym should be incorporated daily by trained teachers.
6.) Do you use food as a reward? If not, what do you use to
reinforce good behavior?
It is now against school policy to bring any food into the classroom. We couldn't even give the students a mint during standardized testing!
I sparingly use reward coupons such as free homework passes, hat pass, free pencil or eraser, etc.
7.) How do you think we as teachers can help our students
develop a healthy lifestyle?
Physical Education programs have been cut and cut and cut. Now we complain about why the children are so obese! I see our school cutting related arts positions at the same time they are implementing 90 minutes of physical activity in the class room during the week by teachers who are not qualified or obese themselves. Why not encourage schools to put Physical Education back in the schedules??

I teach in a public 5-6 building
I teach special educatio, Emotionally Impaired
Equal, between boys and girls
About a 3. Efforts have been made recently to make it better. We got rid of the pop machines, and the snack bar has better choices.
My students get gym class for 45 minutes twice a week. Not enough. There is an after school program in the fall called Girls On The Run, but it costs over $100, so many can't do it.
I rarely use food as a reward. I send "Good News From School" postcards, which the students love because it just shows up in the mail, no forwarning, and the parents are always pleased. I also give them little bottles of bubbles or other trinkets. Older students earn free time on the computer or in the library.
We can role model healthy living, and teach nutrition, but if it isn't happening in the home, at this age, there isn't much we can do.
