Thanks for your help. That's definitely a good one.
I should've mentioned for my assignment that it needs to be a recent book, preferably 2003 or later, but I'm happy to hear any suggestions to keep in mind for the future!
chapter or picture?
For picture:
Imagine a Day by Sarah L. thomson. Focus on visualizing and connecting. (check out Into the book website for info on how to do this).
Fortunately by Remy Phillip great for chain of events
Mercer Mayer Little Critter books -- different books for different things, but I like them all.
Don't let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems -- good for modelling Voice
Panda Pandemonium! (don't know the author) -- great for just having fun. I've used it for predicting and retell.
I could go on, but that's a start.
chapter books: Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry. It's just an all-round good book for primaries -- ESPECIALLY grade 2. Even if you don't use it, GO READ IT. I Swear, you will laugh. It's really very excellent, and I reccommend it to EVERYONE.
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. (judy Blume)
Despareaux (I know, it's cheap to do something that just became a movie, but before it was a movie, it was a REALLY good book!!!)
For older grades, Inkheart (same caveat about the recent movie)
most things Avi are good.
Also consider the Magic Treehouse series for in-between ages (grades 2-4 -- it's on the low side for 4's, high side for 2's).

Thanks! I'm definitely going to write all these down.
While I was the bookstore, someone recommended Splat the Cat so I bought it. I think I might try to work with it to come up with an exciting lesson plan. Again, any suggestions are appreciated!

My Ks love Juney B Jones.
Henry and Mudge are also good.
I like Its Okay to Be Different as well.
junie B has gotten mixed reviews from my parents. they find her too "sassy".

Hmm... I haven't hear anything, but it is something to consider.
well, my parents, some of them, are VERY on top of things. I think Junie B.'s cute, but with "stupid" on the cover of the first book, well, it set off alarm bells for some moms.
other favorites -- always, Robert Munsch (though some of the same problems arise -- like tha paper bag princess -- in the end, the prince gets called a "bum" -- horrors!)
eric Carle
Jan Brett
Jack Pruletsky (poetry)
more will come to me. for classics, A little Princess and the Secret garden -- hodgson Burnett, I believe is the author. And of course, Little House on the Prairie (though I WISH WISH WISH there was a canadian version!!!)
Also, for something similar to Little house, look for Scared Sarah -- great for a pioneers unit -- it ties in native culture neatly.
oh, and Time Warp Trio (a good series for early chapter books) and Nate the Great -- classic!
Clifford and Arthur are old standbys, but too sugary cute for my taste

I just read Pink and Say by Patricia Pollaco (think that is how you spell it) to my fourth graders and they loved it. We are talking about the Civil War and this is a great example of how blacks and whites were treated during that time. Easy to do compare/contrast between the two characters and motivation for joining the armies then write about it.
