My 10th grade class is a rough class and it's not often I get the chance to brag about this particular year. But a letter came to the school today that made (almost) everything completely worth it!
Part of the requirement for the Poetry section we did was sending in an original poem of their choice to this big national contest. The top poems from around the nation would be chosen to be published in an anthology and the winning poems from that group will go on to win up to $80,000 in scholarship money. Pretty big deal. Any individual teacher who has at least 5 of her students chosen for publication will receive a free copy of the anthology.
We had 11 of our students chosen!!! 10 of my 10th graders and 1 of my 9th grade Drama students who wanted to participate too. Nothing like this has ever happened for our school. We get plenty of recognition for sports, but this is the first academic / creative recognition.
As soon as we can we're going to post these poems on the school website. I'll post a link here as soon as that's done!
