Hi,

I'm a student teacher studying in Australia and for one of our assignments we have to present a 'mini-lesson' to our peers.

The topic I am doing is Earthquakes and in particular the procedures and what to do in an Earthquake.

I also want to briefly describe what an Earthquake is and how or why they occur.

My focus is on yr 3-4 (ages 7-9) preferably but I could go up to yr 5 (ages 9-10). Does anyone have any suggestions or simple explanations or activities that would help younger students understand the dangers of Earthquakes and what to do if one should occur.

Your help would be most appriecated,

S Millward

You could talk about p waves and s waves and use a slinky to demonstrate them. You could also use a hershey's bar and apply pressure to it until it breaks. As for safety, since we don't really have earthquakes here in Ohio I am at a loss there.

A slinky-that's brilliant!
Thanks for your ideas hweber.
