I was wondering if anyone out there has a good booklist for fifth grade. (novels) We have such an outdated library and I would like to get some new books for the class....I am looking for mostly historical fiction/nonfiction....we study Native Americans, Immigration, Slavery, War of Independence. Any suggestions????
This is my favorite: http://atn-reading-lists.wikispaces.com/ Check under Readership Targeted Lists.
Janet Lunn has some good historical fiction titles. "The Root cellar" is a good one.

We do a mixture of fiction and historical fiction titles througout the course of fifth grade. We start out with a book titled Janitors' Boy. We use it as a whole class read book. The kids really seem to connect to the characters. When we do Westward Expansion, a good title is Trouble River by Betsy Byars. Also, try Grasshopper Summer. When doing the Civil War, we do Who Comes With Cannons? When doing WWII, try Snow Treasure, and Number the Stars, & Lily's Crossing. When doing immigration, In The Year of the Boar, & Jackie Robinson. You might have to stop every so often and explain references to early 1900 -1950. Also, the author writes it in a voice of with an oriental accent. If you want to try a couple of titles about families with children with disabilities look into Welcome Home Jellybean and Summer of The Swans.
About 8 years ago each grade was assigned an author to do author study. We got Betsy Byars. We still have many of her books and often make book clubs with various titles. Some of her earlier titles make references to tv show which are no longer on the air. I hope this helped.
