:waving:Hi!!
I'm a first year teacher, and my room is pretty brand new. I have a total of FOUR bulletin boards. I will do one that consists of information (schedule, lunch, grades, etc.)...and as for the other three, I'm pretty clueless. I will be starting off the year by teaching Speak & To Kill a Mockingbird, and I wanted to do something with that. This could easily take care of one or possibly two other bulletin boards.
If you have ANY suggestions, I'd be SO thankful!!! As a first year teacher, I'm pretty apprehensive about what I do :idontknow:

Maybe find some pictures of the author of the said books, blow them up, and cut them out, with some blurbs from their biographies? Maybe some pictures of various cover art of the books, in question, maybe even in foreign languages to show how popular the books were? :-) Or, maybe some quotes from the books?
You could always keep one or two to display student work!

What a student graffitti (sp?) or autograph wall? It could be just for them to express themselves - whether through doodles, writing, or pictures.

I have a "What Good Readers Do..." board that includes reading response starters, what to do when you are "lost", reading strategies, our independent reading rubric, etc.
I also like the idea of leaving one board for student work.

I also have one bulletin board dedicated to writing. It has the steps in the writing process, editing reminders, 6 traits, story starters, etc. I also include more specific things for whatever writing genre we're working on, and leave some room for student work.

What about a school sports board? It doesn't have to just be for sports either. Any group or club who does something signifcant (has a game, is collecting donations, had a meet) should be mention on the board. The students will be able to be recognized for their extra cirriculars.

Four boards: (1) What's Happening at Our School? (title) This is your informational board. Get fancy lettering for the title or have the kids do it for you. Also, buy and put border around it. (2) You might want to get the book covers of selections you will be reading. If they are too small see if you can get them enlarged on a color copier. Title this one with the genre you will be studying with the class. Nearby each cover leave room for student responses to character/s, plot, setting, or even a book review. Once you've got the title and covers up, you want to build around it so that it will be there for awhile. The third one you might want to make instructional with store bought or catalogue posters that teach/give important strategies for reading or writing. The fourth one you can brainstorm with the class and come to consensus. I hope this maps out a plan of action for you. Good luck!

just to let ya know...
I did one board for each book. I chose a quote from each book and am going to ask the kids what the quote means to them. They will write something quick on a notecard and then i'll put them all on the bulletin boards. I also did a FYI board with info for school. Last, I think I'm going to give them their own space to do what they want with it. I'll call it "Your Space" and let them put up stuff to help decorate OUR room :) Thanks for all your help.
