My school recently adopted the six trait writing model. A colleague and I attended a workshop and learned lots of great stuff. I have plenty of ideas to actually teach the traits, but I'm kind of stuck when it comes to teaching my third graders how to use the rubric. Help?

I'm not sure what the six trait rubic is, but one way to teach it is to think about how you learned it. There may be a way to modify the teaching techniques to make them age-appropriate.

Could you please list and/or ooutline the 6 traits, and maybe then people will be better able to respond. Thanks!

I am also using "6 +1 Traits". I teach 7th8th so it is a little easier for me to go over the rubric; however, when I read your post I remembered seeing primary rubrics for each area. Here are the links...if they do not open please let me know so I can figure out another way to get them to you...they are great!! It almost makes me wish I taught primary...almost:)

Let me know if these are helpful...
As far as presenting these rubrics to the class, I would either make copies for them to include in their writer's notebooks or make posters of them to hang in the room so that you could refer to them as needed instead of trying to go over it all at once. For example, when you see a problem with word choice, refer to the chart and have them examine their work choice in their own writitngs...

I've tried...I can't get a link to work. If you are interested, you need to join the Yahoo! Group "RealWritingTeachers" and look under their files. There is some amazing stuff there and it is free to join. Sorry...couldn't find another way...

As a high school English teacher, some valuable lesson time can be spent on the rubric. When kids understand the rubric, it is reflected in their writing. Here is a website that lists examples of student writing scored according to the six traits (plus one)!
http://www.nwrel.org/assessment/scoring.php?odelay=2&d=9
Click on scored examples and then enter the ONE trait you are focusing on, and grade level.
The methodology I would use to teach the rubric is a models (student examples) and activities approach. Design a mini lesson using the student model that addresses why that model was scored as a 1, etc... Allow a time for students to share ideas orally and in writing.
Hope this is helpful.
