I teach sixth grade social studies and I'm always looking for new and exciting ways to make it more interesting. A project we always have during the first six week period is for the students to create their own country. (the shape, landforms. scale, etc.) I've just started thinking about an idea that would carry this project through the entire year. As the year would continue as we learn about different types of govt. economy, etc. the students would use the country they created and use it to create their own economy, govt. etc. and they could keep all of the information in some type of folder or portfolio. Does anyone used this idea? What do you think about this? Give me any ideas on this? In my head this sounds like a great idea.

You could have the students make pictures, diagrams, posters, diaramas, ect. to illustrate thier ideas. THis is a project that can apply to all learning styles. Great idea!

Kids love to make travel brochures and power points as well. A running power point would be nice or a book or booklet with a new page devoted to each new concept.

Also, have a conversation or two with the Language Arts teacher. They have to assign certain writing projects every quarter, and that will make your job a lot easier if you can coordinate with the other teachers.

I didn't even think of the other teachers... That was a good idea, MsCoffeeLover!

Budget could be math too. Like how much would your country spend on education? Would they have a different type of currency?

Or, how much to travel there, live there, cost of living, value of the dollar. Wow, cool ideas.
