I teach middle school (Language Arts) in a lower socio-economical community. I would like my students to understand the complexities and have an understanding of the up-coming elections in November. Any one have good lessons for political involvement/presidential elections?

Hmmm... Try to bring it home to them.. Look at and identify problems n their community. Then, look at the candidates policies on these matters.

Can you have someone from the local political scene come in and talk to them? That would make it relevant for them. Or have them research each national candidate and hold a mock election in your room. Also have them pick one area of interest to them, like say gas prices, research each candidates stand, do a venn diagram or t chart graphic organizer and then write a compare and contrast paper, finishing with their views on the subject. When they are done, have them do an engagement meter, what they did, how they did it, and what they learned and did it change their opinion on the subject.

Like the idea of choosing an area of interest. Thanks

What about writing thier own laws for a model community. How would it be governed? Who would pick the leaders? What qualities are best in a leader? Then, bring it back to how the U.S.A. does it.

I just came across this website thought it would be helpful to you-- www.youthleadershipinitiative.com-- there is a nation wide mock election the students can participate in and the students get "I voted" stickers. Hopefully this helps!

I love stickers! I think they are great for prizes and rewards and motivators... :) I think the students do too.
