I had my first phone interview today. I thought it went well. The only concern they had after I asked them what they are looking for in a candidate, is someone who has more experience than I do. I think they're looking for someone who already has experience with the paperwork, etc that is involved instead of "just substituting".

I'm a little frustrated because I have had a lot of experience as a substitute teacher. Even though I haven't done something before, doesn't mean that I won't be good at it once I learn how to do it! I just need a school to give me a chance. Any other ideas I should consider since I'll always be up against people with more experience?
Thanks for reading

Have you subbed mostly in one district? And is that the one you interviewed in? If they have openings and have a good opinion of you then they might be the one to give you a chance. There is a sub in our building who worked as a daily sub for a whilel, got a couple long-term positions with us this year, and is going to be a full-time teacher next year.

This is the way I'd try to present it:

I have subbed in many classrooms. This gives me a very valuable type of experience. Throughout my substitute teaching, I have met and worked with students from a broad range of demographics and backgrounds. I have a good understanding of the different contexts my future students may be coming from. I have also experienced the different policies and workings of school districts. Due to my substitiute teaching, my experience is well-rounded.
