My name is Amanda Phelps. I am a Liberal Studies student at CSU, Chico. I recently received a letter that informed me that I got accepted to the Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE). The APLE is a loan assumption program that assumes up to $19,000 of your outstannding student loans. I need advice whether I should accept this offer or not. Has anyone participated in this program?

I haven't participated, but it sounds similar to a program that encourages teachers to work in low income districts in my state. If you are planning to teach in a qualifying school, it sounds like a great deal. If not, then be careful about what you agree to. The website listing qualifying positions is http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=111

I don't know the program, but I do have a caution. If this is totally out of the blue, be super careful. It could be a scam. There are unscrupulous people out there. Just be wary about requests for personal info.

I seem to remember somewhere in the back of my head, that if you consolidate your loans, then all those programs out there to "forgive" teacher's their educational loans, will NOT apply. So if it ends up being an attempt to consolidate, don't do it!
