On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Excutive Order 9066. Concern over the possibility of a "fifth column" of Japanese sympatheizers caused the U.S. Government to intern thousands of American citizens who were of Japanese descent.

The internment order applied to 450 University of Washington students. These students never completed their studies and never graduated from U of W.

The President at the time wrote to other college presidents asking that they accept his students (presumably after they were released from internment.) Some of the students did in fact receive college degrees from other universities after the war.

At an awards ceremony that was held on May 18, these students were given honorary degrees.

Although I applaud this belated recognition, I am disappointed that the American government has never reimbursed Japanese Americans for the value of private property that was confiscated during the war.

As an Asian American, I also resent the fact that Americans of German and Italian descent were not also interned.
