because all we are doing, is not pushing our brightest to achieve their potential, instead, we are slowing down the class for the special needs kids whose parents insist that their baby should be in a 'normal' class.
So meanwhile, Johnny, who can't multiply past his 3's is in my kid's middle school math class doing nothing more than preventing the teacher, who is already stretched too thin to teach all 35 in his class, to answer questions like (why is it x= the number, why can't it be n= the number, or z, or q)
get the undesireables out of my kid's class.
Also, get the undesireables out of the class I teach. We have spent an entire semester on plotting hurricanes, if you can't do it by now, you need to be in the class with 2 teachers, a para, and 2 other students. YOu are either too slow to be in my class, or too lazy. Either way, get rid of the ones that are slowing the rest of the herd down.
A herd of gazelles in Africa are only as fast as it's slowest member, once he is killed by the lion, the herd speeds up.
I'm all for helping out autistic kids, downs-syndrome children, and any kid that has physical handicaps, I'm not saying forget about them. I'm suggesting that the LAZY kids are the problem, and the fact that SPED allows LAZY kids to be accomodated for.
Don't want to do homework, don't worry, we'll write an IEP saying you don't have to
Don't want to stay in your seat, don't worry, we'll call you ADHD and that will allow you to get out of your seat whenever you feel the urge or get bored.
Don't want to stop threatening the teacher, don't worry, we'll call you Severely Emotionally disturbed (in my area) and tell the teacher they need to adjust their way of teaching for you.

"A herd of gazelles in Africa are only as fast as it's slowest member, once he is killed by the lion, the herd speeds up."
This statement reminds me of one ignorant fool I ran into, that said because a person was born retarded, or if a parent knew their child would be retarded, they should abort it....I mean, after all, supposed "retarded" people "pollute" the human gene pool and wouldn't normally be able to live on their own, right?
My point, is that everyone adds something...Are you saying that the seriously disadvantaged, excuse me, "undesirables" should be allowed to be "put down?" You stated that you understand the issues presented with physical handicaps--what about the mental disabilities? Or the disabilities yet to be identified and labeled as simply "lazy" behavior? Or the disabilities that have cropped up due to the synthetic foods and processes we are constantly exposed to?
Yes, I agree with your comment that some kids appear to just be lazy...But I always give them the benefit of the doubt, because I am not perfect and I cannot be certain it is simply laziness....

you mean, another invented label to help the already lazy get lazier? Hell, why should I learn to read if the teacher will read everything for me. Luckily, I am real antsie in my seat so I'll be given a nice crutch of a label to help me to never change my bad behaviors.

And yet you continue to ignore the obvious observations towards your bitterness and attitude towards the kids...You can argue w/me all you want, but you're still doing yourself and the kids a huge disservice....
Another interesting fact. is that many medical disabilities took a long time to get ID'd...The people that suffered from them were labeled "kooks" and told they were imagining it, etc....
I have the feeling that trying to speak to you is a waste of time, so I will be putting you on my ignore list, as your whole attitude and lack of respect for the students really disturbs me and there is nothing I can do about such a person as you...So good luck and remember when you're sitting in your dark kitchen or living room one night, wondering why your life is so horrible and ranting on about the inequities of others; why life is rough on you..... try to take a look in the mirror, k??

scared to debate??? that's ok, put me on ignore like Fastfood Dave :D:D
Kharma doesn't exist, I make my own future and won't need a crutch in life to blame anything on. ;)
I'm bitter against any kid (and parent) who thinks that classroom disruption is acceptable when you get a nice little label put on you. You take away an education, one outburst at a time, from middle of the road kids who have a question about how the quadratic formula works, but can't get it answered because teacher is trying to stop Johnny from farting in class and blaming it on the fact that he hasn't taken his medication.

An interesting read....
After reading this, I immediately thought of teachers that believe they have the "right" way of looking at things, though they may be shrouded in ignorance and bitterness:
It might seem facetious to say that a teacher should like children, but apparently many people overlook this fact. Every staff lunchroom has at least a few (and most have a large handful) of complainers and groaners who spend their breaks and lunch hours plotting against “the enemy,” sharing their strategies for revenge, nursing their wounds, and displaying their battle scars. These are people who grew up and immediately forgot their own childhoods. Like people who fall in love with the idea of owning a dog, dreaming of the unconditional love a dog will offer, forgetting that puppies pee on the carpet, vomit on the bath mat, chew your slippers, and poop on the lawn. Some teachers envision themselves standing in front of a quiet, orderly classroom, facing a sea of silent adoring, obedient, angelic little faces. When those angelic faces turn out to belong to noisy, lazy, messy, occasionally ill-mannered, selfish, and obstinate little stinkers, those teachers go into shock. Some fail to recover. They become bitter, humorless, overly-strict and spend the rest of their years in the classroom making themselves and their students miserable by trying to make reality fit their impossible fantasies.
I have to say that this kind of teacher is the kind that twists children's heads and makes it a night mare for the child--the kind of nightmare that only causes the kid to go further downhill in performance and self-esteem...It's sad, really...When adults put their own agenda ahead of the very people they are supposed to be working with and improving.....All you can do with this kind of person is report them if you work with them, or ignore them because they are too ignorant and closed minded to listen to any one else..You can try to offer advice, but some need to learn the hard way, if they learn at all......They end up alone because they run off the competent people in their lives around them and choose to only allow the people with low self confidence and a "worshipping" kind of attitude around them...Any sort of dissent is disallowed by this kind of teacher...They thrill at the thought of antagonizing their student's and others around them, in order to show how smart, mystical, superior they are...I guess maybe the bright spot, is that the students that are forced to deal with them, learn really quickly what's it like to deal with a bitter, vengeful, low life kind of person.....
And yet you continue to ignore the obvious observations towards your bitterness and attitude towards the kids...You can argue w/me all you want, but you're still doing yourself and the kids a huge disservice....

I can PROMISE, I'm not bitter, I'm a very humor filled person. not that it matters to you, I'm sure. I know you are hoping I'm miserable, but I'm quite content teaching what I do, coaching what I coach. In the lunchroom, we don't complain about kids, we talk about coaching. Most coaches do that. I'll talk about how I was dissappointed that we got beat last night or talk about how happy I am at our success. Don't think that SPED kids 'get me'. They will either straighten up or not, the sun will rise tomorrow.

I'm especially perturbed by teachers who have clearly burned out ... but are "hanging on" for another 5-10 years just to hit retirement. People like this seem to get increasingly bitter as the years pass and many only go through the motions of doing their jobs.
On the brighter side, it seems that TookieWilliam has finally passed into the dustbin of T.corner history ... :)

Do you mean Tookie is gone forever, or just from my list?? I just couldn't believe that individual's posts...Is Tookie a troll just trying to say offensive things to get people riled up, or a real person??
Your comment of hanging on...I just recently (w/in past sev months) pulled my kids out of school, due to a teacher that was "hanging on"...When I taught at the school for the 05/06 SY, this same teacher was making fun of her class in the teacher's lounge and moaning about being able to retire soon....So I think I have a pretty good idea of what you're talking about!

Tookie was recently added to the list of banned members.
Having placed this person on my ignore list, I'm not entirely certain as to what Tookie has been saying recently ... so I am not precisely sure about what finally led to the boot.
As to why some people like to say offensive things just to get others riled ... who knows? Some people live lives of quiet desperation and they use the internet to vent frustration or anger.
The internet is an interesting medium. We can exchange e-mail in the blink of an eye, pay bills, arrange vacations, and purchase merchandise. We can explore museums, look at live video pictures from half a world away, and enjoy having the knowledge of the ages literally at our fingertips.
The internet has the potential to be a medium for great good but its very anonymity can also lead to great harm.
Consider the case of Megan Meir. A middle aged neighbor got on-line and created a MySpace account - pretending to be a 16 year old boy. The woman befriended the teenage girl and then viciously dumped her, sending her a number of hateful e-mails. One of the e-mails suggested that the world would be better off without her. The girl committed suicide. The woman who initiated the hoax has been indicted by a Federal court and could face twenty years.
People can enter chat rooms or join forums and pretend to be anyone they want to be. They can make outrageous comments secure in the knowledge that their anonymity will rarely lead to any tangible consequences.
If you were to enter a biker bar and walk up to the toughest looking man and pick an argument, you'd probably get you teeth kicked in.
If you walk into a chat room or join a forum, you can say the most blatantly offensive things and what's the worst that will happen? You'll be booted out of the site. Nobody will punch your face in. Nobody will call your home to demand an apology. Nobody will come to your front door and threaten you with bodily harm.
I think the relative lack of consequences has caused some people to engage in reckless and irresponsible behavior.

I knew it had to be the same turd who reinvented himself as Tookie! and NOW, he's ChefUNDERSCOREDave. WOW, When I'm feeling petty and no one agrees with me, I either admit I'm being childish, or I find a group online that agrees with me, but either way I MOVE ON. No wonder our students have such a dismal outlook on the future. Each school probably has their own Turd as a teacher!
Dude, get the hint... you're obviously not finding support here. Find people who are like minded... it's a big internet, I'm sure you can find SOMEONE who agrees with you. When you find them, hold on to there companionship, pity yourselves for your mutual failure to make the statistic for quiting in the first five years. You must have a sweet deal to keep you in your miserable profession.

Just sent a message to the site administrator about TW. So he has been banned? Addict was on top of things again. Durn he's good!
Truthfully, I can relate well to TW's concerns, as I have butted heads with SPED staffers for years, but I cannot condone the methods used in his discussions.

The thing is, though, that I could reasonably discuss thoughts with you as a special educator, but not with CNO/TW. Big, big difference!

I think if tookie is not burnt out then s/he should maybe teach a gifted class or something more appropriate.
