I had to share this, since it made my day, week, year. I received an email from my principal this week, and here is what it said.
"The administrative team decided to nominate you for Region II North Carolina ASCD first annual "Outstanding Young Educational Leaders Luncheon". The event will take place in Kenansville from 11:30 - 1:30 on May 12008. I will give you more information as time goes on. If you have any questions, please see me."
Holy Crap! I was so honored! It's nice to know you get noticed for the good stuff!

Congratulations! Teaching is hard enough, and we are supposed to bring positivity, wonder, support, and reinforcement to our classes and relationships with everyone, but teachers don't always get that.
I am very happy that you had such a wonderful thing happen early on in career. You deserve it!

isn't that another award like "teacher of the year" that actually entails MORE work than you already have?
"Congrats, your the "teacher -who-actually-took-the-time-to-fill-out-the-countless-hours-of-paper-work of the year"
Seriously, though, if it's what you want, congrats

Um, no it's not. I didn't fill out anything, my admin filled out all of the paperwork.
It's hard to know what these things are about if you've never received one, I suppose.

Congrats! A coworker of mine once told the admin. that she would like to be praised for the work she does. The admin then said "well I would liked to be praised too. But to get preise you have to do a good job!"
I couldn't believe she had said that. To get one of the admins to tell anyone at my school that they did a good job would be like pulling teeth. I am currently seeking other schools.

editted for being too mean spirited, huh?
I guess awards are how you judge a teacher's worth huh? Nevermind helping the kids, so long as you make the other teachers and admin THINK your helping the kids I suppose. :D

maybe the admin was right, maybe you better start doing a good job before they start giving out 'ataboys'
If anyone needs constant praise in order to perform, then you chose the wrong profession.

Not me. A coworker of mine. I could care less if they tell me I am doing a good job. My students may not have the highest scores but they have shown alot of growth over the year. I know I am doing a good job.

"a lot of growth" means they were simply the lowest.
An F student can show 2 letter grades growth by raising it to a C, but a B student can only show 1 letter grade's growth, MAX. But which student is actually doing better?

I don't look at their grades like that. I was refering to their reading level on the STAR test. I have one studetns that timed out the first 2 times he tried to take it. He finally got to finish it! He was so proud of himself.

again, the most growth works the same way. The lower you start, the more growth you can show. Meanwhile, who's praising the middle of the road students who have already passed that stage when they should have?
Everyone always congratulates the advanced kids, and praises the bottom kids (for even the most minor stuff like just doing their work) but who fights for the middle kid?

I went to the luncheon today, it was really nice! I met with my AP and we drove there together, left at 9:30, and returned around 3. All the recipients of the award were recognized and given a framed certificate.
The lunch itself was nothing to write home about...but who cares! I felt really good about my admin recognizing me. I was the only person from my county there as a recipient, it was quite a thrill!

It is great for anyone when they gets recognized for what they do. (including students of all levels, people in other professions, etc)
Sounds like you had a nice day and it really felt good to be recognized.

It is great to be recognized. Yesterday, my principal came to my room to tell me how much he appreciated all the extra time I've put in the last month to organize an activity at our school. Even though I didn't expect him to tell me, it really felt great hearing it!

That's great! Just a nice comment recognizing what we do is enough! :D
