So I dont post much, but I do lurk and I wanted to share my good news

Last October I decided to look for a new job. I was poking around the city of albuquerque government job listings looking for interesting positions and there was a random teacher position. I wasnt really sure what it was for but since I am getting my teacher license I went ahead and sent them a copy of my resume. I heard nothing back.

Until Dec. They called me for an interview and I went in on Jan. 1st. It is for a head start position, head start is a government run preschool/early childhood program for at-risk children. Mainly the impoverished. It was a rather ordinary interview and they said they would call in two week with an offer if I got it. I heard nothing back.

Until today. They called and offered me the position. It will be in an early head start program which is 6w-3yrs. There are two classes 6w-18mo and a 18mo-36mo. I do not know which one it will be yet. I will be making $27,000 a year (way more than I do now) with full benefits.

Their are only two things that make me nervous about it. 1) I have never worked a full time 40 hrs a week job before so that will be a real change and 2) it will be strange spending more time with other people's kids than my own. But these kids will be in huge need of a stable environment with caring teachers so I think I will be doing some good.

I am happy for you. You will do just fine.

If you enjoy what you are doing, then the 40 hour a week will go by real fast. You'll get used to it. Just make certain that you take time for yourself to unwind after a full day of work.

Good luck to you and the quality time that you will spend with your own children.

Have fun on your new job. :)

Ditto the congratulations. Come back and tell us about your first days. With the wealth of experience at this site you might even pick up some useful ideas after sharing (then I can steal them too for my class :D)

I have been working with Head Start for ten years and I LOVE IT!! It is truly rewarding to know that I can and have made a difference in the lives of young children as well as the families. I don't know if you will be required to make home visits or not, but I make two home visits and two school conferences a year. Making a home visit is not only a way to have an understanding of the home environment but an excellent way to share information with the parent about their child. Congratulations on your rewarding career.
