My group of gals who are quite a bit lower in skills than their peers were working this morning. One finished ahead, so she took my markers and began drawing a heart on paper. I was going to redirect her to something else, but she kept looking up and trying to cover the heart so I wouldn't see. I figured that I would just work with the others and let her be.
She has autistic tendencies, even though that is not a diagnosis for her. When she is taking a spelling test and does not quite know her word, she tries to peek inside her planner to see how it is spelled. In getting to know her, she does not really know about "cheating" for a better grade. She has to have it perfect, and that is the way she will be able to spell it. She is such a creature of habit and does things in their own order. WE do not take our passing period until she has had a chance to roll the dice on the homeworkopoly bulletin board. I cannot write Mickey Mouse and Daisy Duck on the board in the same sentence. After all, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are the friends. Humor and making a game out of things go a long way in working with her. She can be something else, but she is a delight.
So she takes those markers and works on her project. She finished out her day and did her reading homework with my help. After she knew homework was taken care of, she then took out her project while I worked with the other students. When I went to my desk to submit the attendance, her card was on my desk. She was just looking at me while I looked at the card with a great big smile on my face. I opened up the card and she drew a beautiful picture of me. I was wearing the same colored sweater and blue jeans. I was wearing my glasses and my hair was neat. My nose was not quite as long, and it was straighter than the nose on my face. Her card made my entire day! My reaction tickled her pink also. I am glad about that. Her mom works three jobs, and her aunt is not well at all.
This was a true gift from the heart that she gave to me. :)
