I will be hosting a family fun night centered around physical science and, later, a community night centered around coal (a major resource in our area). I want ideas about what YOU do at your school for such events. It doesn't have to be directly related to science - just what do you do in general that people enjoy? And what do you do to make things run smoothly? I welcome all suggestions!

As a culinary arts teacher, my department has always been tasked to support other departments that have hosted similar events. In the past, the culinary arts students have prepared and set up a light buffet. Our buffets have typically included wraps, kebabs, various appetizers, cookies, tarts, fresh fruit salad, and other food items.
P.S. I also live in a mining town but instead of coal, our mining company is going after copper.

Do you know when this event is schedules? I ask this because we are having a PTSA very soon, and it is Science night, so all of the Science teachers are doing something. We have several speakers, some kind of star lab, several presentations, and even I will be doing some interactive science activities. Apparently, there are tickets that are going to be issued because of seat availability and a certain number of sessions.
That is all I know, but our science night will be here in a week or so, and I will be able to have more information for you then if you haven't already scheduled yours.
Sorry! That is all I can offer right now.

When we have parent nights we try to have enough staff to cover different stations. We also have students display and explain projects that they have done related to the topic for the evening. It's great for students to be able to explain what they are learning to parents. Sometimes we have games and activities that students and parents can do together. Just make sure that you have enough things going on to give people choices and keep them interested. And, as Chef Dave suggested, food always makes an event better!

The events will be in February (physical science) and April (coal).
