Since I homeschool, I am always trying to come up with really fun things that we can do as a family and incorporate into our school lessons.
The most recent one we did was a Shrek movie night. The kids had been wanting to see the new movie, Shrek the Third, so we got that and had a "Shrek dinner and a movie".
The menu consisted of snack/appetizers, main dish, and desserts. Here is what we came up with.
Snacks/appetizers:
Leeches on a log (aka: bugs on a log)--raisins, peanut butter on celery sticks
Goldfish--Puss in Boots' favorite snack
Bugs--We used bug shaped crackers (keebler, I think) and fun bugs gummies (gummy bugs that have juicy centers like gusher fruit snacks)
Main Dish:
Worms and Eyeballs--Spaghetti and Meatballs
Q-tips and Earwax--Breadsticks and Cheese sauce to dip
Desserts:
Dirt pudding--Vanilla pudding with crushed oreos on top for dirt (I used mint oreos to add some green to it) and gummy bugs sticking out. I also put them in edible waffle bowls for easy cleanup and to look more "rustic"
Spider cookies--I opened oreos and laid strips of chocolate licorice across it for legs. I used chocolate frosting to hold them down and then put the top back on. Frost the top with chocolate frosting and use mini chocolate chips for the eyes.
Gingerbread cookies--you can't have a Shrek night without decorated Gingys..lol
Drink:
Swamp Juice--can't forget this! Green Hawaiian punch made into punch with pineapple juice and 7up (add the pop last)--Put spoons of green sherbet all across the top to cover it--add the 7up now to make it foam and look like a swamp. We made bug ice cubes by using ice cube trays and the fun bugs gummies that I mentioned earlier--put one to two bugs in each tray and fill with water.
It was a lot of fun and the kids are still talking about their gross dinner!
What other fun ideas do you have like this? I am always looking for new ideas.
Thanks! :D
