For my internship i am planning to do a hibernation unit for a grade1-2 split. I searched the internet for great ideas but, I did not find that one idea. What I have found is individual units such as: bears, frogs etc, nothing really on hibernation. So, how do I go about it, do I do a mini-lesson for each animal that hibernate (such as: what they eat, where they live, migration, etc.) or do I just focus on hibernation (what they do while hibernating).
If anyone has any great advice it would be greatly appreciated
thx

Instead of focusing just on hibernation, do something on preparing for winter. Then you can include migration, hibernation and storing food. I use literature with my students to teach these concepts and then have the students partake in a game like situation.
I have my students migrate by giving them wings and pretending to fly south. I also put in cards that say things like you got lost from the group (meaning died, etc) to show the difficulties of migrating. For those students who die, I give them gummy worms and then share with everyone at the end.
I have my students collect popcorn from the ground and then crawl through a tunnel. Then they open cards that say red (didn't make it), yellow (very thin, find food fast) and green (good hibernation). Finally, I give all of my students a film canister and have them hide the canister where they will be able to find it later. I then look for canisters that I see and pick them up. At the end of the game, I have my students try to find their canister and those are the squirrels that lived.
