I am just looking for information onhow to become a Literacy Coach, or Literacy Specialist. I have tried several districts and they have said that they just got the position through just being employed in-house. I really am wondering how to get certified or what extra degree I may or may not need for this type of job. I have not seen any posted, but know they are out there. Help.

You could check with your state licensing agency to find out if additiional licenses are needed for this type of position. I teach in Wisconsin, where a master's degree or reading specialist license is needed to be qualified for those positions.

Our literacy coach got the position through a three-year grant. She was a language arts teacher at our school. I'm not sure of the education requirements.

I know of two sets of Literacy Coaches. One set are those coaches who got the position through the in-house process. That is, the job and requirements were posted by the individual school. Through the interview process, a person was selected for the position. The other set is composed of coaches who responded to a "job opportunity" advertised by their School District or their state.

Keep looking. These opportunities are out there.
