so i have not posted much, mainly because graduate school has taken up a lot of my time.

I start my field work in a couple of weeks and have a quick question.

What is proper dress?

even though my under graduate school was a liberal arts college, ALL of my friends were in business and are now working in the business world, and that is really all i know when it comes to dress for work.

Can anyone just give me an idea on what is proper dress for a male 22 year old (23 in a week) graduate student who is just doing field work.

Happy Birthday in a week.

What kind of field work will you be doing? It is difficult to make any suggestion without knowing just what you will be doing.

Anyway, I am female and in my work, I see most young people wearing business casual. However, whatever the field work is that you will be doing, being neat and being coordinated well should do the job. If it's in a classroom/school, try not to dress like your students. Wear appropriate clothes for your position. This doesn't mean that you should wear a suit and tie. What you might want to do, is to take time to observe some males working in the job that you will be doing. This might give you clues about the appropriate dress attire.

Good luck.

I would call the school/institution and ask what appropriate attire is for the position you will be observing. That way, you will fit in.

Proper dress varies from school to school depending in part upon your program of study.

When I first began work on my master's degree, I started out in administration. I went to my first class wearing dress slacks and a buttoned down short sleeved Oxford shirt. Would you believe that all of the men wore suits with long sleeved shirts and ties?

They not only looked like administrator wannabes ... but they were also so painstakingly PC that my gag reflex had me transferring to curriculum and instruction by day's end.

My attire fit in much better with other teachers although there were several students who were much more casual; wearing dockers or even jeans with t-shirts.

The males in my building (elementary) wear slacks and shirt/tie. That is not every day but most days.

Call and check since proper dress varies widely depending on location!

Call your cooperating teacher, ask your advisor, or call the principal and ask. If you don't get a good answer and are in doubt, go with dress pants, shirt and tie. After your first day, adjust accordingly based on what other teachers are wearing.
