In an effort to reduce a high school drop out rate that is twice the nation's average, the school board of the Houston Independent School District has approved a plan to adopt flexible scheduling.

Flexible scheduling will allow high school students to attend school part time and/or on Saturday.

HISD has apparently long advocated part time education, night classes, and Saturday school but haven't had the funding to adopt this program.

Until recently, state funding rules said that districts were only paid based on their daily attendance rates. If a student was in class for less than two hours, the district received no funding for that child. The state only gave funding for students in class for more than four hours a day.

This law was recently changed. The new law says that districts may get full funding for any student who is in school for a total of 1,080 hours a year.

A small pilot program started by HISD is now being expanded to the entire district.

What do you think of this idea? Do any of you work at a school that has adopted flexible scheduling?

We don't use flexible scheduling but I think it would be a great idea for some high school students. It would allow those who need to be home to watch little brothers and sisters an opportunity to do that.
It would also allow students with poor home life to stay at school longer and even come in on the weekends.
Not sure how the staffing would work....that would be rather interesting-more like a college I guess. But then it would get the students ready for college.
