We are in the middle of all that ice that you have been hearing about on the news. I had almost an inch at my house and we canceled school for three days. Two days were because of all the ice and the last day was because the town lost power and the water tower emptied and they had a boil order. Now, I love a snow day as well as the next person, but now we are losing two days of our Christmas break and a day that was scheduled in January!! Ugh!!!!

And guess what? They are calling for up to 4" on snow tonight. At least it is a weekend and things should be cleared up by Monday.

Just a rant to relieve my snow day frustration.

I have to admit I miss snow days. It stinks that you are losing Christmas break days, usually they have bad weather mak-up days built into the calendar. Here in Texas we never get a day off just because. I grew up in the snow and remember it well.

Oh the bliss of seeing your school closing notice at the bottom of the t.v. screen! There is nothing like returning to that warm bed for just a little longer. There is also nothing quite like going to school halfway through the summer to make it up! Our policy is to add the days at the end of the year instead of trying to fill in during the year. I remember as a child going to school several Saturdays in a row to make up snow days. It was painful. I can't imagine how it was for the teachers.

I am really glad I moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona.

When I was a kid growing up in the tropics, I used to dream of a white Christmas. It always looked so picturesque.

The reality of having to dig out my sidewalks basically killed any interest I had in a white Christmas.

Snow is a humbug.

Last year I had to dig out a couple of feet of snow just to get my car into my driveway. During the night, a snow plow came through my street and trapped my car by piling three feet of snow behind my vehicle.

I don't miss the snow at all ...

I love snow days! I was wonderful to spend the day snuggled in bed and play in the snow with my dog. I don't mind making up a few days at the end of the year. But over 5 wouldn't be worth it.

How terrible to make up days during the break! People have plans, that's just not fair!

I don't think make up days should be one for one. I think for every three days you miss you should only have to make up one. A little bit of missed school isn't going to hurt anyone.

That would be awesome! I don't think that the school boards would ever go for it. Something about needing 180 school days a year.

Here in Chicago, we could have 10 feet of snow and the Chicago Public School would stay opened! Last year when we had some really bad snow, the mayor got on TV and said something to the effect of, "Who else is going to watch the kids?" SO - our mayor considers us babysitters!! Nice, huh?

We pray for snow days.. but only one or two. Some years we have them, some years we don't. We had one day this year so far but not because of snow.. it was because the wind had caused the power in the whole town to be out.

We tend to have snow days on my birthday. This year, about all the schools in the region called off school in honor of my birthday!

Snow days are the pits. We dont build any days in for them and they have to be made up at the end of the school year! Bah Humbug is right. :) Luckily Central Arkansas doesnt get much.

You got that message, too! WOW!!! I thought that we were the only ones considered babysitters! Our illustrious former school superintendent said the same thing when we had a bad snow storm a few years ago. I think he came to us from Chicago! If he did, I wish that you had kept him!

Not looking forward to snow; but, I'm anxious to hear what our current superintendent has to say or will do if we have a bad storm.

If ones own school superintendent feels that we are babysitters, should we get upset when others feel the same?:(

That sounds realy weird having to make up the days lost by snow! How do they organise thngs like that? Does each school just decide what day etc? Over here if a school is closed due to bad weather (flood, storm, snow etc) or the teacher can't get to their own school because of the same then the teacher goes to their nearest Public School to assist and the kids stay home if they can. No make up days.We do appear to have a longer school year than you though. We attend school approx 200 day a year, we would never get through the curriculum in 180!

Our district "forgives" up to 2 1/2 days missed for bad weather. Once it gets to three days, we make them up at the end of the school year. Here in rural northern Wisconsin there are many snowy, icy days! I like to have one or two snow days, but hate having to make them up in June!;)

Here on the south east coastal area, we don't get much snow. However, when we do and if it sticks, the entire city practically shuts down. Hurricane season is altogether different. We get a few bad days during that season. If I am not mistaken, we have make up days built into the school calendar. They aren't at the end of the year, but we miss one probably attached to another holiday.
