Hi, This is my first time posting to this forum. It looks like a great resource for teachers on reading and language arts. I'd appreciate anyone's help with finding resources to improve reading fluency for students in grades 2-4. Thanks for your suggestions.

Reader's theater is definitely a great way to improve fluency. Also, try reading a book as they do and then the same story fluently and see if they can tell you why they liked one book better than the other, even though they are the same book.

A great tool to measure fluency are the aimsweb curriculum based measures. Lots of passages to have the students practice on.

Ask the students to time each other for one minute reads and mark misread words. The students can plot the number correct. Very handy.

I also love any kind of choral reading as a class. And definitely teach students to mark phrases in their text. For example: The red head boy, John, went to the grocery store to buy apples, oranges and bananas.

Before the students read, have them swoop out the text to show phrases and then have them read in those phrases. So, The red head boy (phrase one) John (phrase two) went to the grocery story (phrase three) to buy (phrase four) apples, oranges and bananas (phrase five).

There are many ways to mark up a text for phrasing. If the student hasn't made a critical error and can justify their choice, let them read it the way they mark it up.
