On Wednesday of last week, two of my beginning culinary students - a football player and a cheerleader asked me what we'd be doing on Friday. I told them that we'd be learning how to grill hamburgers.
"Oh darn," grumbled the students. It turned out that the football team and the spirit line would be leaving for Phoenix on Friday during school. The spirit line had a competition and the team had a game.
The students were so despondent that I had to grin.
"Look," snapped the cheerleader. "He's SMILING. He's happy we won't be here."
I used my fingers to curl my lips down. "I'm not smiling. I'm actually very disappointed you won't be here. That'll leave me with two extra juicy burgers that I'll have to eat all by myself. What a shame."
The football player leaned over and whispered to the cheerleader. "Ah well," he said, "It could be worse. At least we're not making bacon cheese burgers. They're the best."
I couldn't resist my fiendish impulses. I beamed. "Bacon cheeseburgers ... what a great idea!"
The two students shook their heads. "You're so mean!" moaned the cheerleader.
"Oh man," groaned the football player. "The coach will kill me if I skip out on the team."
On Thursday when these two students came to class, I had the grill fired up and waiting. I had two buns, two burger patties, two slices of cheese, and two pieces of bacon ready to be cooked.
"Guess what?" I said to the two students who were going to be absent on Friday. "You're making burgers today! The rest of the class will do something else today the two of you are grilling."
The cheerleader was so happy that she bounced up and down while screaming and clapping her hands. The football player grinned and said, "I knew you wouldn't let us down."
