Have you heard about this year's mutant cold virus? The U.S. Public Health Service's Center for Disease Control has issued a warning about a mutant cold virus.

This virus is characterized by difficulty with breathing and a persistent fever.

10 people have died from this cold.

As with other cold viruses, there is no anti-viral medication that can be taken.

The CDC recommends following standard health procedures which include the following:

1) Get plenty of rest to bolster your immune system.

2) Exercise regularly - especially aerobic and cardiovascular workouts to strengthen your immune system.

3) Avoid close contact with those are sick and when you are sick keep your distance from others. (This is easier said than done by teachers in a classroom).

4) Stay home when you are sick.

5) Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing. If a tissue is not available cough into your elbow or turn your head and sneeze into the air and not into your hand.

6) Wash your hands with sanitizer solution.

Sneeze into the air? That doesn't sound very sanitary...

I'd only heard a little bit about this. It is something to be aware of. Colds and flus spread quickly, especially among preschoolers. Definately time to review the hygiene lessons!

In the food service industry, we are taught to duck our heads and to sneeze into our arms. That isn't sanitary either but is preferable to sneezing into the area where germs may drift until they land upon food.

Wonderful.. something else for me to worry about. My daughter just got out of the hospital with some kind of bacterial infection that we are not 100% sure of what it was. My son has just had bronchitis on top of a week-long asthma attack (did you know they could last that long???).

Finals are coming up & there is no way that I can afford to get sick or let my kids be put in the hospital again. I guess it's time to go buy some more Airborne....

I hope your children are feeling better.

It does seem to be the worst time of year to get sick. Everyone has so much to do!

If you get a cold and either have trouble breathing or a sustained high fever, you should see a doctor. If caught early, this mutant cold can be "cured" or at least you can heal from it. When I spoke to a medical professional, they told me that if caught early, you should be able to heal from the cold. It is those that don't seek treatment that end up dying. Not sure what the treatment was...probably aspirin to break the fever and something for the breathing.

Whenever I start to feel ill, I start pumping Vitamin C with Esther C and sucking on Zinc Losenges. It helps so your symptoms don't get full blown and quickens the recovery time.
