I had a student last year who we referred for intervention. He qualified for special services. He is a very sharp kid, but had no life experiences to draw on. We just started our new year and he came to my classroom to read to me. He was reading on a beginning of first grade level when he left me last year. He is now in third. He read a Clifford book to me without much difficulty. I was soooo proud of him. He is trying to learn and has been reading all summer. He drove his parents crazy asking to go to the library. I guess we do make a difference.

I am an education student at a university in Brisbane, Australia. This is very exciting news and I can't wait to get out there into the classroom to make a difference too. I guess it must feel like mundane days sometimes and you could loose focus on what you are really doing there and what your original passion was. So I would also like to encourage you to keep at it and even to look for the opportunities. Rosey72
Hi! all,
Cjay here after a long absence. Sorry, have been busy working and haven't had much spare time. I am working for a Disability jobnet here in Oz and have some clients with learning disabilities. I work to help them find part time work. and support them within their workplace as well as tutoring them in literacy and numeracy skills.
I think the best part of teaching people, whether they are children or adults is when they have success, and watching them grow into more confident people. My job is not always easy but it very worthwile and I must say I love what I do. Cheers to all, Carolyne :)

I completely agree, Carolyne. And what a major accomplishment, Hassell!! :D You should be very proud..of the student and yourself! You made a difference in that young child's life and that is amazing and so rewarding!!

It's things like this that make us all remember why we chose this profession.

That is the best feeling when a former student wants to share with you how well they are doing.
