Before I joined, I read a poem from the teacher to the students with a bag of "goodies". Can anyone help me here? It started something like...Welcome to 3rd grade! Here is a bag of goodies...a big eraser is for the mistakes we'll make...

I am not really sure about the above, but it was something like that. I like to give my students something fun and useful at the beginning of the school year.

I know what you're talking about... I'll have to search the web and see if I can run across it... I'm wanting to make a welcome packet for each one of my students and that would be a great idea... what else are you doing for the first days of school? I'm looking for good ice-breaker ideas!

They receive a sucker with a placement card one it (so they know wehre to sit). This year I and into planets (I work in table groups, so each table is a planet). Last year we worked on continents, so each table was a continent. This is a quick and easy way to teach something without teaching it. I put a star pencil (because they are stars), a big eraser, crayons* (to color the world with) *Walmart has them for 20 cents this week. It seems every year I find something different to put in the box/bag of goodies.

I usually do a "Class Bingo". I make a 5 x 5 grid and place different things on it...who speaks another language...who has a sister (brother). I also like to have the students take a head silhouette and draw what they thinks makes them unique. They then have a writing lesson to write what makes them unique. I also have a "My Favorite Things" sheet for them to fill in an return for their file. I return the completed sheet on the last day of school. They generally get a kick out of it.

Also, I do a classification/sorting with shoes on Friday. If you want more directions with the shoes and you want a copy of the grid, my email is alleazer@okcps.org. I'll be happy to share what I have.

Welcome Kit

Here is a "Welcome Kit" that will win the hearts of children and parents!

• cotton ball
• Hershey's kiss
• sticker
• rubber band
• penny
• tissue
• gold star
• toothpick
• band aid
• gold thread
• eraser
• Life Saver
Place the items listed above in a gift sack or zip bag along with the note below:

"Welcome to your new classroom. Each item in this bag has a special meaning for you!"

• The cotton ball is to remind you that this room is full of kind words and warm feelings.
• The chocolate kiss is to remind you that I care about you.
• The sticker is to remind you that we will all need to stick together and help each other.
• The rubber band is to remind you to hug someone.
• The penny is to remind you that you are valuable and special.
• The tissue is to remind you to help dry someone's tears.
• The star is to remind you to shine and always try your best.
• The toothpick is to remind you to "pick out" the good qualities in your classmates and yourself!
• The bandage is to remind you to heal hurt feelings in your friends and yourself.
• The gold thread is to remind you that friendship ties our hearts together.
• The eraser is to remind you that everyone makes mistakes, and that is okay.
• The Life Saver is to remind you that you can come to me if you need someone to help you.

Is there one without candy? We cannot give out things of minimal nutritional value basically nothing that is fun.:( I would love to do something like that if there is something you can substitute for the candy. That is a great idea!
