I'm redesigning our school website for next year using Joomla (thanks to whoever recommended it!) I already know that each teacher will have an area of the site for their classroom site to post homework, newsletters, pictures, etc. Our newsletter and other contact from the office will also be posted online.
What are some great (or not so great!) things you have on your school website? I'm looking for ideas! :)

okay personaly i would like to see CLEAR contacts page, and APPROPRIATE infromation about the school to visitors, of course no matter what you choose to have, everything should be EASILY accessable, pictures of the place will be nice too, howeveer make sure you get someone who knows how to use a camera, personally i wouldn't like to see under exposed pictures, taken from dodegy angles that make the framing look unattractive!

I like your idea. I would recommend putting a section for a class syllabus.

I would recommend posting calendars and schedules for school events and specials (pe, art, etc.). A few other ideas include: parent/teacher handbook, parent resources, pto/pta information, school supply lists (are good to keep up all year for new students), links to each of the teachers' sites, and a photo album to post pictures from school-wide events.

If teachers have blogs, you could post their feeds on the main page so parents could see what's new in the form of headlines.

Videos and podcasts made by the students can also be part of the school website.
has anyone ever seen a school/class webpage with an interactive element -- message board/IM? I don't know if it's exactly a GOOD idea, but I think it would make for an interesting extension of community. Plus, how many parents would appreciate being able to send of a message like "who do I make the cheque out to for the class picture?!" and get a reply right away. There's a million little things that you just don't get told or are in small print on a page your kid spilled juice all over. I love message boards (duh), so I'd always vote for some kind of interactive feature.
