Hi everyone,

I have a homework assignment for my childcare class that requires me to interview someone who has been working with young children (preferably preschool-aged) for several years.

These are the questions that I need answered:

What guidance strategies are used most often?

- Where were they learned?
- Why were they chosen?

Which guidance problems are encountered most frequently?

- Which resources are used most often when a difficult problem occurs?

What do you think is the most important thing to know about guiding young children?

If anyone would be willing to help me out I would really appreciate it. Also, the deadline for this is around 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, next Wednesday.

Thank you very much!

*bumping this* The assignment is due today. There's still some time if anyone here would like to help me out...

Thanks!

If you would like to help me out, take a look at the original post and post your answers to the questions I posted.

This is all anonymous, by the way. The only thing I need is answers.

I think you haven't received any responses because we don't really understand what you mean by "guidance".

Are you in the US? Here, we usually think of guidance as guidance counselors for school age children or High School guidance counselors who help with college applications and other issues.

If you mean behavior strategies, we have lots of ideas. A a preschool teacher, I think of guiding parents and caregivers to help assist in a child's development at home.

Sorry, this reply is probably too late to help with your assignment.

Hi SLP,

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I’m from the US. I’m quoting my textbook and I agree that it is kind of confusing. :/

But anyway, I believe you’re on the right track with how you understood the question.

I actually have a couple more hours until my class so if you or anyone else could answer I would be really appreciative.

My assignment was originally due several weeks ago but I
have been given more time to do it. I need answers by no later than next Wednesday. Please help me out if you can.

To clear things up a bit I have added some information which is contained in parentheses next to some of the questions listed below. If anything is still unclear, please let me know; I'm more than willing to try and clear things up. :)

The Questions:

What guidance strategies are used most often? (to disclipine students / guide them into doing the right thing)

- Where were they learned?
- Why were they chosen?

Which guidance problems are encountered most frequently? (biting,
hitting, etc.)

- Which resources are used most often when a difficult problem occurs?

What do you think is the most important thing to know about guiding
young children?

Hi I have worked with preschool children for 8 years...In my experience the guidence strategies I have used have been praising for good behavior when I see it. Making a big deal about so the child is more than likely to repeat it. When a discipline issue arises, first the child is removed from the situation. If it is a minor issue the child may not get to play what they wanted to play, the child may have to sit in Time Out or sent to se the director or parents are called.
The problems I have seen the most have been fighting over an object.

The one thing that I have learned about guiding young children is that the child has to feel secure in their environment. They must know that you as their teacher has control and will give them boundaries(of course they will push them). Now days the preschool teacher will be more of a parent to them than their own parent. If by the age of 5, 75% of the brain development occurs and we have them in our class 6-8 hours a day, WE have been given an awesome opportunity and hand in shaping them and teaching them skills they need to grow into
