What sort of seeds are your favorite to have each child plant to eventually bring home? Do you use cups, pots, or some other container? How do you protect the plants to transport them on the bus or in a backpack so that the plants actually survive the trip home?

Sunflower seeds are a historical favorite for small children. You can have growth in about two weeks with most varieties.

Whatever cups you use (and you can use most 6 - 8 oz disposable cups as planters), have enough for two per child, that way on the trip home, you can invert a cup over the plant (if it is small enough) and use tape to seal up the plant for the trip home. How big do you plan to let the plants get before sending them home?

Raddish Seeds Are Quick To Sprout. :)
You Can Draw A Face On A White Cup And Then Plant Grass Seed And It Makes "hair".

Radishes and sunflowers sound good.
Have you ever planted lima beans in a cup?

Krafty,
I like the cup over cup for protection.

Sharon,
The face with grass hair is cute too!

Have you tried the lima bean in a sandwich baggie? Put damp papertowels in a sandwich bag, place a dry lima bean in the bag. Seal bag. Tape to window where the bag will get sun. The baggie will allow the children to see the initial root growth, and stem and leaf growth. Sending it home is easy--just hand them the bag! They can plant it when they get home if they like. I did this project all 6 years I taught preschool/pre-k. With the pre-k children they journaled their seed's growth (by drawing a picture each day) and they took their journal home with their bag.

Oh, I really like the lima bean in the bag idea too. I hope my kids can manage to draw the pictures for their journal!
