St. Patty's Day Ideas

What are your favorite classroom activities for St. Patrick's Day? I think it's the best time to reinforce the colors green and gold. And the rainbow of colors all relates too. We sing "I Can Sing a Rainbow" and "I'm a Little Leprechan" (tune of I'm a Little Teapot). Of course, the leprechan plays all kinds of tricks on us too!

When I taught 1st grade, I loved to sprinkle leprechaun dust (gold glitter) in my room. I told my students that we had a special visitor while they were at lunch. We did a quick writing activity to guess what it was (which was turned into a class book). Then we followed the dust and looked in the cabinet and found leprechaun juice (Green koolaid) and leprechaun squares (rice krispie treats tinted green). very fun!

My daughter's PK class had a great time with St. Patty's day. The Leprechaun came in during the night a messed up the room a bit (a few over turned chairs, and various easy to clean messes) and left "gold" (those fake plastic coins) in a pot.

For an art project that week, they made Irish hats by using the good Coronet (really stiff paper) bowls. They painted the bottom green and decorated it with some feathers and gold ribbon for the band. The teachers then added an elastic string to tie it on their heads.

I did handprint shamrocks with my kids on tshirts, but you could just as easily do it on paper - three hand prints in a shamrockish shape (fingers together, palms to the inside, one pointing left, one to the right and one to the top) then trace around it to give it more definition.

I've carried the fun home too. I try to make sure we have just a little milk left in the bottle and color it green, food coloring in the toilet (they think leprechan's pee green, therefore at one point they also thought he peed in the milk :p ), stuffed animals piled on their beds while they sleep - anything fun and harmless.
