I love planning activities around different holidays and seasons. Having every lesson based on something like Valentines' Day is fun. Math lessons, reading lessons, vocabulary words, history and even science lessons can be planned around a certian theme. The children seem to love it, and it helps encourage children to fully appreciate the holiday or season they are celebrating.
What are some ideas for lesson plans on other holidays besides Valentines' Day??

Welcome to The Teacher's Corner!
I can assure you that we have most of the popular holidays covered right here at The Teacher's Corner. Typically, we will have them all listed on our homepage (www.theteacherscorner.net) at the beginning of the month.
Also check out our printable worksheets (http://www.theteacherscorner.net/printable-worksheets/) (particularly the word-search and word-scrambles) - they have many options for ANY holiday.
Lastly, check the 'Seasonal Items (http://www.theteacherscorner.net/seasonal/index.htm)' in our main navigational menu (top right of this page). Every month we update that with our latest resources for upcoming holidays.
Hope this is a good start :)

In Culinary Arts we just completed the production of spiced pumpkin rolls stuffed with sweetened cream cheese. For Christmas we'll probably make an assortment of holiday cookies. We'll also have a gingerbread house competition.
I envision making chocolate shaped hearts for Valentine's Day.

I love the challenge of fitting every subject area into one theme. It is a lot of fun, and I try to make sure each activity to covers more than one thing. For example, language and math might be tasting mint, winterfreash and pepperment candy canes. We'd talk about how they tasted and what we thought of them (language using descriptive words) and then make a chart of who like which cane best (math charting). This is probably easier at the preschool level, but it is fun to do in the upper grades as well.

I love teaching in units. It is fun if they can center around the holidays but they don't have to. I think that the children learn more when taught in a unit and all subjects relate to the one unit. For example: a winter unit. Use social studies to teach cultures relating to winter celebrations/holidays. I would use the Eskimo language as vocabulary words as they have multiple words for snow. Then I would read the Year of Miss Agnes as it is based on a teacher in Alaska, I think. To tie in math, I would have the students live in northern Canada or Alaska. Talk about ice roads and how they can only get supplies during the winter months. So, they need to plan for the spring/summer months. Have them buy supplies and such to prepare. You can talk about the three states of matter or properties of water.
