I am looking for any great ideas for portfolio assessments to use in a presentation. Does anyone do anything interesting or unique they would like to share?

I am getting ready to start a portfolio assignment that I am proud of. We have been doing an interdisciplinary unit on The Declaration of Independence. As the science teacher in our team, I focused on Ben Franklin. After learning about the many sides of Ben Franklin, the students are going to generate a list of characteristics that Franklin possessed. Then students are going to write a memoir about their modern-day Ben Frankin...someone in their life that shares many of these characteristics.
When designing portfolio assignments, I have found the most important thing is to have an authentic purpose - make it real-world, something the kids actually care about. I am finished writing articles about diseases, natural disasters, etc. because the kids don't like it. Now I am writing editorials and speeches about genetically modified food, stem cell research, childhood obesity, etc. and the products are much better! I have never taught a memoir in science class so I can't wait for the snow to clear and get started with this project.

I agree. Anything that is real world goes over better.
