There are tons of ways to get students to monitor... it all depends what your goal is for their independent reading. A couple of books/authors that I would suggest are... Regie Routman or Fountas & Pinnell's "Guiding Readers and Writers". Both have excellent ideas. Personally, I ask that my students read independently about 5 nights a week for 20min. Two of the five nights, I suggested paired/shared reading with a parent. They record their minutes on a calendar and log their books completed. My book log consisted of date, title, author, genre, # of pages, and difficulty rating (easy, just right or challenging-- from the Fountas & Pinnell book).
