I've seen other message boards do this and thought it would be a fun way to get to know you all since I am new. Sometimes its fun to talk about something other than education anyway.
Simple game...
I will post a question and the next person that posts a reply will anwer it followed by a question for the next person. Just keep it going and we will learn alot about each other.
Do you have children?
staplehead

Wow....not everyone at once. I guess I will just talk to myself.
No I do not have any children. Maybe in a couple of years. Next question....
What made you want to go into teaching?
If no one responds, then I am a dork and this thread is dead.

I was working as an Education Director at a Boys & Girls Club and fell in love working with kids and helping them understand what they didn't get in school. So I went back to school and got my masters....now...here I am.
What is your best and worst memory from last year?

Staplehead: Don't give up on this thread -- I think it's a great idea. I suspect things are just a little slow right now, but will pick up the more we keep things like this moving.
What is your best and worst memory from last year?
Best memory:
I've been developing an evaluative tool (not for grades, necessarily, which is why I'm hesitant to use the word "rubric") for my English students' responsive writing. My principal even gave me a professional day to work on it. Basically, my students write six weekly paragraphs in response to whatever the assigned reading is. I wanted them to get a sense of how I'm evaluating their responses, since it has nothing to do with grammar or spelling or anything like that. The rubric I developed measures the depth of response (without qualifying any particular depth as necessarily better than the others -- you have to deal with the shallow stuff before you deal with the deep stuff) and then the nature of that response (ie, does the student's paragraph deal with personal taste/distaste for the reading, does it criticize the writer's decisions, does it compare the reading to other things the student has read? that kind of thing).
Anyway, I wanted to see how the students would evaluate their own work, given this set of lenses, and they took it and ran with it, honestly and clearly categorizing each other's work. The students saw what their own patterns were and were made aware of other ways to respond; in the weeks that followed, the responses were much more varied and the students' growth in understanding the material was so much noticable!
That was my best memory -- seeing students actively engaged in evaluating their own learning. Wow.
Worst memory: There was an awful airplane crash on Maui early this calendar year. It was an air ambulance (when you live on islands, this kind of thing is important), and the nursing crew and the pilot all died. One of the nurses was the mother of one of my students. Rough times for us all. I had to watch sophomore girls deal with the realization that this could have happened to any of them if it could happen to their friend. Of course, this awareness of mortality has to happen anyway, eventually, for all of us, but I hated to see it happen this way. And of course the pain we all felt for this student was immense. To lose a mom and to have that loss on the front page of the newspapers for weeks is something I don't even want to think about.
Okay, next question:
Teachers are known for being territorial. In what way are you especially so? :)

Teachers are known for being territorial. In what way are you especially so?
-------------------------------------
Classroom possessions - I teach at a low income school. The ONLY items provided by the school are: student desks, student chairs, teacher desk, teacher chair, overhead projector, and textbooks. The room is bare. I had to spend my own money on things like bookcases, folder holders, credenza, stool, VCR/DVD, pencil sharpeners, pencils, paper, novel sets, instructional support materials, rewards, videos, DVD's, tickets, posters, bulletin boards, etc. Our parents are notorious for not providing anything for their students except backpacks.
Given that the materials in the room were purchased with my money, they are MINE. Woe be to the kid who tries to tag them with XIV, XIII, or any other gang junk. Woe be to any other teacher who tries to borrow something without asking.
That is theft, particularly if the item is never returned.
Question:
Everyone has a pet peeve. Mine is people who waste my time.
What is your pet peeve and why does it warrant that status?
staplehead
07-18-2006, 09:21 PM
My pet peeve in things that don't really matter are when the cabinet doors are left open in the kitchen.
But really my pet peeve in the world of education is teachers who see their job as babysitting. I can't stand to see teachers show up without plans just to tell the kids to go play. Don't get me wrong...kids are kids and they DO need to play. I wish people would not get into teaching unless they are CALLED to do it. It needs to be their profession...not just a job.

I forgot to post a question....hehe
What is a bad habit of yours?
helpinghands
07-19-2006, 07:53 PM
I'm new to the site and really liked the idea of answering and posting questions.
I've been teaching children with special needs for about 9 years. I taught at a psychoeducational center for 4 years before going into the regular education setting. I'm single, have no kids but love them to death. I think one of my bad habits is eating out. I probably eat out 5 of the 7 days in the week. I know that's half the american population but I really am trying to stop (actually no I'm not).
My question is really going to be a little different. I was surfing the net today and came across a business opportunity, found it interesting and would like to know what you guys think. I've asked a couple of friends and neighbors but noone has heard of it. Anyway my question is:
HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THE 1STEPSYSTEM?
HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THE 1STEPSYSTEM?
No, sorry.

I don't know about "wipe out," but I do very well with rock and roll trivia! But then, I think you knew that...
My question:
Do you secretly read your students' online journals, blogs, or MySpace pages?

Haha! Good one!
Do you secretly read your students' online journals, blogs, or MySpace pages?
I'm not a teacher, but I would certainly think that that would be a given. Keeps things interesting...:D
Sassafras
07-21-2006, 09:26 PM
I do read theirs pretty often. They are all 18 and older. I have a son too but he's not a computer person. His only use of the computer is to play the Deer Hunter game. Since this is my first year teaching and right now I don't have any students, my answer would be no. :D I hope third graders aren't allowed to have a my space account.
Next question: What is your favorite movie?
scrivener
07-26-2006, 02:59 PM
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite film of all time is Casablanca, with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. In addition to just being a great movie and starring my favorite actor, it has a theme I really relate to: the idea that love, while glorious and important, is not the most important thing in the world. Sometimes you have to give it up for the greater good, for ideas that are bigger than two people's love.
*sigh*
Okay, next question:
What would a total stranger be able to tell about you just by looking at your car?
TeacherRW
07-27-2006, 03:19 AM
Question was: What would a total stranger be able to tell about you by looking at your car?
That I have kids. The carseats in the back, the stickers on the windows, and the diaper bag in the backseat are all dead give-aways. :) They'd probably figure out pretty quick that I am a teacher also because I always have some "resource book" or prof dev book laying on the floor taking up space.
Next question... Describe your favorite meal for any occasion-- celebratory, romantic, every day.

Question was: Describe your favorite meal for any occasion-- celebratory, romantic, every day.
Tough one. I'm going to try non-holiday. My favorite is just a family meal, usually only made on the weekend. I prep a whole chicken with slices of garlic under the skin and DH cooks it on the grill. We make mashed potatoes, gravy and corn to go with it. It is just good comfort food to me. Then I use the leftover chicken to make a wonderful chicken & wild rice soup.

If you could only watch one TV show each week what would it be?
This is a tough one because I LOVE TV!
I would have to say that I would watch Boston Legal. My husband and I enjoy that it comes on at 10:00 and we have children in bed. It gives us an hour together.
Next question:
As a busy mom I never get "me" time- If you had one hour to yourself what would you do?

If I did not teach, I think I would have went to culinary school and became a chef. I love to cook, most days, and I love to watch "Food Network" and get great new ideas.

What is your favorite TV channel/show?
We turned off our Direct TV about 5 years ago to save money, so it has been a while since I watched much on cable (we usually pop in a movie at night). BUT, when we had it, I loved HGTV in general as a channel. As for shows, they weren't on HGTV but I really enjoyed Iron Chef, Junk Yard Wars, Battlebots, and Trauma: Life in the ER. My favorite network show is "Dancing with the Stars".

I would say the custodial staff. They do all the messy, icky jobs. We had some flooding where I live and it hit our lunch room. It was awful! The custodial staff was fantastic! I give them a lot of credit.
Next Question:
What's your favorite sport?

I'd pick Harriet Tubman. She was my first childhood hero, at the age of 7. I'd want to hear stories of her Underground Railroad. I'm quite sure the evening would turn into a long one.

Q: So what is your all time favorite website and why?
There's something about the IMDb that blows me away. Begun initially as an obsession by movie geeks on the Usenet, it continued on the WWW as the singlemost authoritative source of movie information. Of course, it is now owned by Amazon.com, but that doesn't take away from the scope and ambition of the original maintainers of the DB. I don't know if it's my favorite, but it is one that impresses me most.

My most embarassing teacher moment was when the cd player didn't work and play the audio materials that I wanted to use in the class. I tried to make it work for a couple of minutes, I even asked some students to help me with that.
After a few minutes, I realized that I havent put the cd inside. I played cool and made jokes at that time, but I was really embaressed.

Boxcar
11-10-2007, 01:30 PM
I think it is fine if the teacher is able to give his/her child a well-rounded education. This means not only the correct subjects and tests, but also social interactions. If the child is involved in activities that include other children so that problem-solving and social skills devolop, that is excellant. Also, children begin to learn how to speak in public when giving reports at school. The homeschooling teacher needs to arrange for his/her child to gain experience in public speaking as well.

That would be Norway. Mom was born there with her family. Dad was going to take the four of us to Norway for two weeks for their 25th anniversary, and Mom said, "Norm, why spend the money?" So we did not go. :(
What was the hardest year for you in school?
This year. Our current location and economy has caused a decline in enrollment. This year we had to combine two grades. Guess who got it  But that is not difficult, as they are together only three periods. We have sold the church and school and are currently building one in an area that is growing. But this has caused a very "unsettled feeling" around the school. I cannot put my finger on it, but the parents seem more demanding, the students seem to have a feeling of entitlement that we have not seen before.
What is your favorite subject to teach?
mopar
12-02-2007, 09:15 AM
I love to teach Language Arts because you can make so many units that will also teach the subject areas. I think it is important for the students to see how the subjects work together and find LA much more fun when it is in combination with other subjects.

Just a refresher on how this thread is supposed to work. Take the last post, answer the question posted. Then add a question of your own for someone else to answer. Its okay to answer other questions as long as you do the above two things also. Don't just search for a question you want to answer, makes the thread too confusing.

What is your favorite bulletin board?
MsJenniffer

~I am a Toddler teacher at a local Childcare Center so I get to put all kinds of fun bulletin boards up...my favorite so far that I have come up with is "My kids are the bees knees!" I take pictures of all my kids and glue them to the center of construction paper flowers. We then make bees for our craft and we stick them flying all around the flowers on the board.~

What was the nicest random act of kindness by anyone in your school (teacher, student, staff, etc) you've witnessed ?

What was the nicest random act of kindness by anyone in your school (teacher, student, staff, etc) you've witnessed ?
At the end of my first semester of student teaching, my class of foundations (introductory level) 10th grade biology students bought me a card. In it they wrote individual notes expressing their thanks for giving them a fun, interesting biology experience, saying they would miss having me as a teacher, and telling me I would be an excellent full-time teacher for future students after I was done student teaching. One student wrote that I had made a significant difference in his life and thanked me greatly for that (he had been having a difficult time in many aspects of his life and was in danger of failing several classes, but he opened up to me one day and we talked for a while and ended up turning things around for himself).
I had never expected to receive praises from them like that. That little card with the meaningful notes in it left a huge impression on me, and I will never forget that one particular group of kids. They gave me the reassurance that I had indeed picked the right career and that I was making a difference in their lives.
My question: What is the most bizarre thing you have witnessed while teaching? -The kind of thing that makes you say, "Wow, I can't believe that just happened, or that I just saw that."

Do you have a favorite student that can do no wrong in your classroom, and do you let it show?

I totally have a favorite, I have two favorites actually. I try not to let it show. He still has consequences when he has behavior problems.
One of my paras has a favorite, and definitely shows it. Although she is tougher on him than some of the other students because she expects more of him. We jokingly call him her son.
Do you have any OCD-ish qualities? I teach students with autism, and I find that most people who work with that population tend to lean in that direction. I'm curious if this is across the board, or just my school.

I haven't noticed any OCD-ish qualities of myself. However one of my friends has to walk into and out of her classroom a few times before leaving or entering her room. She does teach students with autism. I don't think she is diagnosed with any OCD but we do joke with her about it. It seems that she is rather forgetful.

What is the most unusual think you have ever seen on your campus? Even though I am not yet a teacher, about 10 years ago here in Texas the Emu fad had waned and there were literally dozens of huge Emu farms going into foreclosure. Since they could not sell the meat and could not afford to feed them, they just set them free. For a while it was not unusual to see any number of them running through town. One day, I went to pick up my son and a city police officer, animal control officer and a county deputy were all out on the playground trying to help snag a run-a-way Emu from the campus before the students came out. Too funny!

What comes to my tired mind was the time when I went to my mailbox and found an "interesting article" my colleague ran off and put in everyone's box as a must read. It was ed related. What was something you did growing up that embarrassed you?
I'm embarrassed to say it; but it was when I was caught shoplifting -- Yes! SHOPLIFTING. Hey, it wasn't my fault! I went to the market with a friend who was getting things for her mom. While in the store, she asked me if I wanted something. "Sure!" I said and got a snack cake. She put it in her cart. However, when we approached checkout, she told me to put the cake inside my coat. Dummy me! I did as told. (Kids can be so stupid.) Anyway, when we left the store, we were stopped by security. The cake was confiscated from inside my coat. :o We were told to never come into the store again! And, if we ever came back, the police would be called and we would be locked-up.
The ironic thing is that my friend had shoplifted several items of junk. She showed me the stuff as we walked back to her house. I guess I wasn't a good thief! :) And, she ate the stuff that she had stolen and wouldn't give me any! One of life's lesson!
Question: Other than getting married or becoming a teacher, if you could do something over again, what would it be and why?
Well, I've never gotten married and I'm going to be a teacher in just a few days!
If I could do something over again, I'd probably have started learning the languages I started learning in a different order. Learning languages is a hobby of mine, but the most useful ones are the ones I've picked up most recently, and I wish I had started those before so that I could be more proficient and therefore use them more comfortably. And better yet, I could teach them!

If you could stay one age forever, what would it be?
For me, age is in experiences and what we make of them and not in years. I want to be as old as possible because I enjoy the benefits of learning from an experience, even when the process of learning from it is painful. I like being able to appreciate more ways of seeing the same situation as time passes.

What is a meaningful present you have received?
Boxcar
02-12-2008, 06:00 AM
I wouldn't say this was a gift, but it is something I remember quite well. I think that is what makes it meaningful.
It was the first time I went on vacation. I'd been wanting this for many years. I'd say it would have been about four years of waiting. My parents finally were able to go. I was still a child, and I remember the pure excitement and anticipation the week before it was time to leave.
As adults, I don't think we often experience that same thrill of wanting and recieving that we did as children. Maybe it is because we still have responsiblities and worries.
My question is: What is the most memorable thing you've learned from a student?
Bananas
02-12-2008, 05:42 PM
I won't say that this is something that I have learned from a student, but it has refreshed and reinvigorated my spirit. That is the joy of giving from the self with nothing expected in return. To see students share some-thing they make or something of theirs as they watch in anticipation is a true gift.

What is your favorite holiday?
Thanksgiving.
I have an international family, so we have everything from injera and wat' to zucchini parmeggiano at the dinner table. I love the general mingling of family. I enjoy spending the weekend going to movies or going for walks with family and talking about life. I love that Thanksgiving is secular, so our family can put our religious and political divide aside for the holiday. We also have a concert as a tradition. Anyone can participate and can present art in any form. Someone plays the piano; someone else shows some art work; another relative dances. It is the only time I get to see all my siblings and nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles. I have a very big family so it seems I meet another relative every year. I met some cousins I never even knew I had last Thanksgiving.
Do you find that your personality affects the people around you or that your personality is affected more by the people around you? In other words, do your friends allow you to express different facets of yourself, or are you more likely to bring out their various facets?

How do you cope with your stress?
jsfowler
02-23-2008, 07:13 AM
I cope with my stress by keeping a journal of all the good moments in teaching...when I am having a stressful day and feel I am at the end, I read a few passages and remind myself why I got into this crazy profession in the first place. I read out of my journal more than I wrote in it last year, but this year the oppostie is true. I have also learned to keep work at work - I have a wonderful husband and two children (ages 8 and 1) who deserve a full-time mom when I get home.

What is your least favorite cleaning chore?
Sorry, I forgot to post a question last time.
I kind of like cleaning stuff. I always have; don't ask me why. I can say that my favorite chores are doing the dishes and sweeping. I guess my least favorite would have to be vacuuming because the vacuum cleaner is so noisy and I have hypersensitive hearing.
If your (hypothetical) child asked you for money, would you give it to him/her or would you try to get him/her to earn it? (By doing chores or finding a job, etc.)
Miss T
02-23-2008, 10:55 AM
It would depend on what the money is for. I wasn't given an allowance by my parents growing up, and chores were expected. We didn't really 'earn' money, we saved it from birthdays and Christmas and mowing grandma's lawn, things like that. I've never asked my parents for money for anything in my life, and it really instills a sense of independence that is invaluable to me.
But if I had a choice between just giving it out and having him/her earn it, he/she would def. earn it somehow.

Who was your favorite super hero when you were growing up? Why?
Bananas
03-09-2008, 04:13 PM
It was always a bad deal for hubby to watch the Rocky as he would get playfully punchy and I would have to make him heel. After he saw the first Rocky, he took Bananas along with him each time he went jogging. Bananas was no Butkus. The two would head out with hubby humming "duh duhduh duh duhduh duh duhduh duh."

Yes, I went to Cancun when I was in high school for a spring break class trip and I studied abroad in Strasbourg, France for a semester during college. It was an amazing experience. I really want to go to Ireland with my husband and children. My children both have auburn red hair, green eyes, and freckles...my husband and I do not, you have to go back many generations to find it. Maybe we will find some ancestors while we are there!
What is your most memorable college experience (good or bad or even naughty;) )?
sgaestel
03-10-2008, 05:54 PM
My most memorable college experience was definitely a professor. My nemisis...
I had him three times. The first time I definitely didn't do my best work, and got my first "C". The second time, I worked my TAIL off, determined to do better. I got a "C". The third time, I turned the first paper of the course, and got a "C". I went to him, and said, "what do I have to do? What am I doing wrong?" I got a "B-" in that class. It felt like I had won a congressional medal of honor!
He gave me the only two C's I ever got in college.

What do you collect that's unique and interesting?
I collect anything that's written in different languages. Pamphlets, food packages, whatever. I also collect all sorts of jazz, but I'm not sure how unique and interesting that is.

If I were to land in a completely different country, I think it would be easy for me to adapt, except for the language barrier. My enjoyment would be predicated on how I am treated and accepted. If things are all negative, then I would long for home or any place else than there.

I taught her daughter in 7th grade...5 years later it was her daughter's high school graduation...she was in the Top Ten. She saw me in the stands and pulled me aside. She said that during the year her daughter had taken AP English, AP Chemistry, and AP Biology. She would complain about some of her classes but never complained about anything science. She asked, "You must really like science." Her daughter replied, "It's OK. It's just easy because Ms. Fowler really made us work hard. She did not let us leave her class until we really understood." She thanked me for teaching her daughter both science and work ethic. She told me that she was going to UK for pre-dentistry.
