Remember Johnny? We used to wonder why he couldn’t read. Now he’s back as the central character of a dark and twisted mystery, Wasted (The History Mystery of Public Education in the United States and How It Got That Way), the newest work from Irondale Ensemble Project premieres January 20 – February 19, Tuesday - Saturday at 8 pm at the Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue (between 9th and 10th Streets). Wasted is an original collaborative work written and directed by Jim Niesen and members of the Irondale Ensemble Project.
Wasted is a sweeping, Alfred Hitchcock-style epic that has “Johnny” as the embodiment of the complete promise of public education and the search is on to discover how he’s become so wasted. This hard-boiled, theatre noir of intrigue, betrayal, mystery and lost hope follows detective Sam Slate as he connects missed opportunities and broken promises, while avoiding comforting myths about the good ol' days when our public schools allegedly worked just fine. What Sam finds at the end of his investigation implicates both surprise suspects and expected culprits, from this country’s founding fathers to Horace Mann to a large yellow bird.
“With Wasted we want to blow apart the mythology of public education. We want to understand why the richest nation in the history of the world has such conflicted notions on the value of a public education and why it is often so unwilling to invest in the future of its most precious asset—its citizens of tomorrow, “ said Jim Niesen, Irondale Ensemble Project’s Artistic Director.
Irondale Ensemble Project is an experimental/research theatre ensemble established in 1983. The company has roots in improvisation, traditional Stanislavski techniques, extensive movement work, and collaborative writing techniques. Irondale's mission is to create theatre as a strong voice for social change, while embodying a deep commitment to artistic excellence. Through the content of their performances, and by using theatre as an educational tool in schools, prisons, shelters, and other community settings, Irondale strives to have a direct, often life-changing effect on its audience. Central to the work is an exploration of collaboration, creativity, pedagogy and the process of theatre making, which calls upon a long association with professional artists. The ensemble conducts this theatre making exploration in traditional and non-traditional spaces. Irondale has produced over 40 major Off-Broadway shows including the American premiere of Brecht’s CONVERSATIONS IN EXILE and seventeen original pieces. During this time the company has mounted two international and four domestic tours. Irondale is a founding member of the Network of Ensemble Theatres, a constituent member of TCG and ART New York and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. The Irondale Dramaturge position is supported by funds from the NYSCA Theatre Program Technical Assistance Program.
