This will be my 2nd year teaching 2nd grade. Just remember they are first graders coming in. You will have to lead them through many activities, especially at the beginning of the year. You will see them become more independent as the year goes on. However, don't assume that they know how to do things on their own right away. It is easy to assume these things since you are teaching things that seem so basic to us. Always model!

I am feeling a bit apprehensive about beginning the year...I have been a Kindergarten teacher and LOVE it!!! I had the opportunity to transfer into my home district this year but will be teaching second grade for the first time! Please offer any suggestions you may have for getting off to a smooth start. I would love to know of some great second grade appropriate get acquainted activities, music (I love Dr. Jean but know it isn't age appropriate), and read alouds/activities to start the new year! Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
