Hi, I'm deciding what lesson to teach and record for the ATS-P video. I'd like to do a math lesson for my third grade class, but am not sure what would be a good choice? I currently teach only reading, and feel that math may be easier to wrap up and use manipulatives. I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions by someone who has already done this. My strength is in fact reading, but the lessons I've tried overrun the time allowed. Help....

One thing you might try is using a cumulative review game like jeopardy, which got amazing results for a friend of mine. Otherwise you can use the different angles (right, obtuse, etc.) as a way to help keep the time alottment down.

I'm unfamiliar with the ATS-P video...but as a third grade teacher I have some ideas for interesting math lessons:
1. A lesson on time (something that many 3rd graders still struggle with) - a neat idea is to make edible clocks using a tortilla for the background shape, m&m's or other candies as place markers for the 12 numbers, and licorice (in two sizes) for the hands. Each student makes an edible clock on his/her desk and then they practice showing different times on the clock and you can monitor them by walking around the room. At the end of the lesson, the students are allowed to eat their edible clocks - which they always love.
2. A lesson on adding and subtracting money - give each student a set amount of money and a few sale ads from the Sunday paper and then have them go "pretend christmas shopping" for presents for their family. The students have to record how much each item is and how much they have left over after their Christmas shopping. I usually create a worksheet with easy to follow directions to help them stay on track.
Hope this helps!
