I work at an electronic distance learning school and we have an assignment that calls for the students to write an 8-10 page research paper. Well, like most of you, I have some nightmarish families and one of them happens to be stuck on writing the research paper. I've sent the assignment back 4 times with corrections and she hasn't followed them to my expectations so she received a 57%. Mom is mad. Student is mad. I'm kind of mad at myself. So I get an email from the student and she says, "I don't like in-text citation and it is not vital to research papers." I about lost it. But I realize she probably didn't read the necessary bookwork, and she is in 10th grade. She honestly doesn't like in-text citation and she doesn't understand the importance of it. So I'm looking for a good way to explain to her the necessity of in-text citation and the importance of a topic sentence with 4-5 supporting sentences (oh yeah, she doesn't believe in that either and mom is waaay on board with that one. Oh-and look out. She will be in public schools next year). I will be looking at the text book when I get home, but I need some good websites or something to support my cause. I'm in for a long haul on Monday. Oh--and if anyone has information on creating Plagiarism Policies for a High School, that would be great. This whole situation makes me fully aware of the necessity of such. Thanks for your help!
