I am wanting to start college to become a teacher. Fourth Grade, I'm hoping, but anything in the Grade Schools. I have a high school diploma (2 years ago) but have not taken college classes then. No college experience.. What degree is required to be a teacher? Substitute? What classes does it require? I have been trying to get in to see a counselor since the middle of November but no luck - and registration has started for Spring so I am trying to get started alone. Any help?

First, to teach you need a BA then your credential. Second, to substiture in my county anyway, you can be working on your BA and sub if you have the time. You need an emergency permit for this and it can only be renewed a couple of times. To substitute with some limitations, you need a BA in anything. To sub long-term, you do need your credential. Now getting started, do not wait to see a counselor unless it is mandatory. If you have a Jr. college near by, get started there. The first two years is when your general ed is taken care of and it is wise to do this at a Jr. college. It costs less for the same classes just make sure the units are transferable. Sometime during your first semester, make an appointment with a coulselor. It is easier at this time since things have slowed down for them. You also need to keep track of your progress. DO NOT rely on the counselors for this or you will be sorry. Once you get your foot in the door, things will fall into place. Good Luck!

Hello. It is different in different states. In Indiana you only need a high school diploma to substitute.
